Under the strategic cooperation agreement between Samsung China and Baidu AI Cloud, the Galaxy S24 will apply the Ernie large language model to implement the Circle to Search feature. Chinese users can use this action to search for text, images or videos with results provided by Baidu.
In addition, Ernie also helps users translate and summarize text as well as transcribe voice in many different languages through the Note Assistant function.
Globally, Samsung uses Google's Gemini AI technology on the Galaxy S24. However, in China, where Google has no presence, the South Korean company has relied on its domestic AI business to keep its new 5G smartphones competitive.
According to Counterpoint research, AI smartphone sales could reach more than 100 million units this year and reach 522 million by 2027. The race to integrate generative AI into smartphones among Chinese brands is getting more intense. They see this technology as a potential factor to change the declining global mobile industry.
Earlier this year, Honor introduced the Magic 6, its first 4G smartphone to feature its own large language model, MagicLM. The month before, Oppo also launched the Find X7, which features its own AndesGPT.
Several Chinese manufacturers have announced their own large language models, including Huawei and Vivo. In contrast, Xiaomi has integrated AI into its HyperOS operating system. Baidu will open Ernie Bot to the public in late August 2023. The company said Ernie 4 can develop AI applications for various traditional industries and business scenarios to improve efficiency.
Samsung’s latest partnership comes as Chinese AI service providers face increasing regulatory restrictions, with mainland authorities issuing new guidelines and regulations to ensure that AI-generated content is in line with what the government allows.
China is one of the first countries in the world to issue regulations governing domestic AI services, targeting all AI content services, including text, photos, audio, and video. Authorities require businesses providing products to the public to promote healthy content and adhere to core socialist values.
