During 2 days (June 23-24), the Free Breast Cancer Screening Week organized by the Central Maternity Hospital received 100 women for examination.
Ms. LTH (45 years old, in Tay Ho, Hanoi ) had surgery for fibroadenoma of the left breast and knew she was in the high-risk group. However, because of being busy and subjective, she still delayed the follow-up examination.
Ms. H. shared: “Due to work reasons, I did not go for a thorough examination right away, but after learning about the breast cancer screening program organized by a large hospital like the Central Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital, I was motivated and determined to register for the examination. If it were not for this special occasion, I might have continued to hesitate.”
Through examination, the doctor discovered that Ms. H. had a Birads 4 lesion in her right breast - highly suspicious of malignancy and a Birads 3 lesion on both breasts. She was ordered to undergo a core biopsy to diagnose the disease.
According to Master, Doctor Phan Thu Hang - Department of Gynecology and Oncology, one of the doctors performing the screening examination, said: Most of the patients coming for examination on this occasion are accessing specialized screening techniques for the first time.
Besides many completely normal cases, doctors recorded 10 cases with suspicious lesions, including large tumors with atypical images, requiring biopsy and MRI for definitive diagnosis.
This expert said that early detection helps patients have a good prognosis. Breast cancer, if diagnosed in the preclinical stage when there are no symptoms, can be completely cured.
After the breast cancer screening, Dr. Nguyen Van Thang, Head of the Gynecological Oncology Department, said that at the department, many breast cancer patients were detected at an early stage thanks to screening. These cases can be treated in the direction of preserving the breast, combined with a gentle adjuvant chemotherapy regimen, without much impact on the quality of life. That is the clear benefit of early detection.
During the breast cancer screening, Dr. Dao Thi Hoa, Head of the Examination Department, said that through the screening, many people expressed their wish that the program be held more regularly, not only for the purpose of health check-ups but also because this is an opportunity for women to listen to their bodies and care for themselves - something they often forget in the hustle and bustle of life.
