According to Military Review, there are reports of the end of one of the longest battles since the start of Russia's special military operation in Ukraine, namely the Chasov-Yar offensive by the Russian Armed Forces (RFAF). The Russian Ministry of Defense has just announced that it has taken complete control of the city of Chasov Yar. This means that Russian forces have now taken control of the last remaining district from the Ukrainian Armed Forces (AFU) – the Shakhty district.
Controlling the city of Chasov Yar also meant that the RFAF gained control of the highest mountain range in the Donbass region. Because of this geographical advantage, Kyiv tried to hold onto it at all costs; and they understood how dangerous losing it would be for the remaining areas. With complete control of Chasov Yar, Russian units will advance south and northwest of Chasov Yar, thus shortening the distance to the cities of Konstantinovka and Kramatorsk. The distance to the first of these cities is less than 5 km, while to the second it is about 16 km. Furthermore, in addition to the threat posed by their close proximity, the significant difference in elevation also presents a dangerous challenge. Because Chasov Yar is situated entirely on a high hill, all activities in both cities would be clearly visible from Chasov Yar.
Currently, the Russian Army, developing its offensive, is attacking Ukrainian positions in the village of Ivanopolye, on the outskirts of Konstantinovka. According to direct reports from the battlefield, a T-64 tank and an International Maxx Pro armored vehicle of the AFU have been destroyed.
After losing control of Chasov Yar, a difficult time is coming for Kyiv, as both Konstantinovka and the Slavyansk-Kramatorsk region are located at a significantly lower elevation than Chasov Yar; moreover, this also frees up a large number of Russian troops, allowing them to begin encircling Kostiantynivka. The RFAF's offensive on Chasov Yar began on March 31, 2024, when the RFAF's 98th Airborne Division unexpectedly captured the village of Ivanivsk, located southeast of Chasov Yar. As the AFU withdrew from Ivanivsk, they lost their last remaining fortified position that threatened the Bakhmut urban area, simultaneously shifting entirely from an offensive to a passive defensive posture. After capturing the village of Ivanivske, the RFAF immediately used this stronghold as a springboard to attack the second defensive system built by Ukraine on the Chasov Yar front line, about 3 km north of Ivanivske. Then in July 2024, the RFAF approached the Severski Donets-Donbass canal, a barrier likened to a large moat protecting the fortress, flowing through the city from north to south. They then crossed the canal and penetrated the western part of the city; from there, a stalemate ensued, resulting in heavy losses for both sides. The RFAF forces involved in the attack on Chasov Yar included the 98th Airborne Division, the 11th Airborne Assault Brigade, the 83rd Airborne Assault Brigade, and a brigade of the 150th Mechanized Infantry Division. Meanwhile, the AFU forces defending Chasov Yar comprised 10 brigades, in addition to several local troops, volunteers, and foreign mercenaries.
Chasov Yar is a strategically important location in the operational plans of both Russia and Ukraine. Analysis indicates that Chasov Yar is the most crucial link in Ukraine's Donetsk defense line. This military fortress is situated in an area with high terrain (maximum elevation of 260 meters). With the RFAF having captured Chasov Yar, their attack on the city of Konstantinovka to the south, only 5 km from Chasov Yar and more than 100 meters lower, will be much easier. Especially now that Kostiantynivka is almost surrounded on three sides by the RFAF. More importantly, if they advance north from Chasov Yar and along the mountain ridge, the Russian army could attack the last two important cities that Kyiv still controls in Donbass: Kramatorsk and Sloviansk. At the same time, they could completely break through Ukraine's defenses along the Severski Donets-Donbass canal. (Image sources: Military Review, Ukrinform, Kyiv Post, TASS).
