Durian is one of Vietnam's key agricultural export products, experiencing strong growth in the first few months of the year. This growth shows positive signs in both production volume and value.
Specifically, although export volume has not yet reached the peak of the peak harvest months, export value in recent months has remained positive, thanks to improved product quality, more stable selling prices, and an increasing proportion of frozen and processed products.
In the first quarter, the average export price of frozen durian reached over $4,300 per ton, an increase of more than 20% compared to the same period last year. The increase in value exceeded the increase in volume, indicating that the industry is gradually shifting from growth based on production volume to enhancing value and quality.
In terms of markets, exports to not only China but also many other demanding markets continued to grow well, such as the United States (up over 107%) and South Korea (up nearly 260%).
According to businesses, expanding the export protocol to include frozen durian is opening up huge opportunities for the Vietnamese industry. Unlike fresh durian, which is heavily dependent on seasonality and has a short shelf life, frozen durian can be transported over longer distances, access more demanding markets, and reduce logistical pressure during peak seasons.
According to experts, this is a pivotal stage for Vietnam's durian industry to shift from "rapid growth" to "quality growth." Leaders of the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection stated that durian not only brings significant export revenue but also contributes to changing the economic landscape of rural areas in many localities. From previously low-income areas, many households have become more prosperous by switching to systematic durian production, linking with businesses, and participating in the export chain.
