US-Iran negotiations remain tense as US Secretary of State Marco Rubio warns Washington will seek “other avenues” if a satisfactory agreement with Tehran is not reached.

Speaking in New Delhi, India, on May 25, Rubio said the US believes a “quite solid” proposal is on the negotiating table regarding the possibility of reopening the Strait of Hormuz – a strategic shipping lane connecting the Persian Gulf with the Arabian Sea.

According to Rubio, the US wants to reach a good deal, but if that doesn't happen, Washington will have to handle the issue differently. This statement comes after US President Donald Trump lowered expectations for an early agreement to end the US-Israel conflict with Iran that erupted on February 28.

Washington and Tehran have maintained a ceasefire since April 8, while mediators continue to push for a negotiated solution. However, Iran continues to block most shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, and the US continues its blockade of Iranian ports.

On May 24, President Donald Trump wrote on the social media platform Truth Social that the US lockdown would remain in effect until an agreement is reached, certified, and signed.

In Tehran on May 25, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said that Iran and the US had reached conclusions on most of the issues discussed, but this did not mean that an agreement would be signed soon. He also emphasized that the two sides are currently focused on ending the war and have not yet discussed the nuclear issue.

Meanwhile, a senior official in President Donald Trump's administration told Reuters that Iran had agreed "in principle" to dispose of its highly enriched uranium and reopen the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for the U.S. lifting the naval blockade. However, Iran has not confirmed this information.

Diplomatic efforts also involved Pakistan and China. According to Pakistani television, Army Chief of Staff Asim Munir and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif traveled to Beijing on May 25 to discuss the situation in the Middle East with Chinese leaders.
