VAR (short for Video Assistant Referee) is a form of advanced technology applied to support referees through video. VAR technology is used in football to help referees make the most accurate decisions through recorded videos. VAR is only used in the case of a "clear error" or "serious missed situation" related to a goal/no goal; Penalty/no penalty; Direct red card (not a second yellow card/second warning); Misidentification of the offending player (in the case of a referee warning/yellow card or sending off).
VAR technology is expected to be applied in 3-5 matches at V.League.
Information from VPF also said that with the guidance and active support from FIFA, the final steps for VAR to be officially operated in the system of national professional football tournaments are being carried out. In order for referees to gradually catch up and get used to VAR technology, based on recommendations from FIFA, in the first stage, VPF Company will select about 3 to 5 matches at Night Wolf V.League 1-2023 to operate matches with VAR.
Matches that are not related to the championship or promotion/relegation will be selected. Based on the scores of the teams on the current rankings, VPF Company and the Vietnam Football Federation Referee Board will coordinate to select matches that meet the criteria recommended by FIFA, and are expected to officially select matches to apply VAR from round 3 of phase 2 of Night Wolf V.League 1-2023.
For the stadium of a match with VAR, FIFA also requires all stadiums to be geodetically measured using specialized machines, providing accurate dimensions to integrate the virtual offside line for the VAR vehicle technical system. The technical team will take about 4 working days/stadium to complete the measurement to ensure the accuracy of the virtual offside line when operating a match with VAR.
FIFA will closely monitor the implementation of VAR technology in Vietnam and will monitor the entire operation continuously for the next 3 years. During this time, everything from the operation, VAR referees on duty and the VAR vehicle technical system must send data to FIFA. Any errors, if any, during this 3-year monitoring process could cause the implementation of VAR in matches to be suspended.
Head of the Vietnam Football Federation Referee Committee Dang Thanh Ha disseminates information to Hong Linh Ha Tinh Club
In order to implement the VAR implementation plan, VPF Company and the Vietnam Football Federation Referee Board have planned to work with V.League clubs to disseminate information related to the implementation of VAR technology in matches. On July 14 and 15, VPF Company and the Vietnam Football Federation Referee Board had their first working session with Viettel Club and Hong Linh Ha Tinh Club, to disseminate information to players and members of V.League clubs. The discussion revolved around information on the operating principles and activities of VAR in matches; what players and coaching staff can and cannot do in matches with VAR. In the coming time, VPF Company and the Vietnam Football Federation Referee Board will continue to work with national championship clubs competing in the 2023 season.
The introduction of VAR technology into matches from the 2023 season is being supported and expected by clubs. This also helps V.League improve the professionalism of the most attractive tournament in Vietnamese football.
