Following the sales failure of the ultra-thin Galaxy S25 Edge smartphone last year, Samsung is cautiously considering the possibility of launching another ultra-thin phone.
According to Bloomberg , this information was revealed by Won-Joon Choi, Director of Mobile Operations at Samsung, after the company launched the Galaxy S26 series. These products feature significant upgrades in AI and anti-peeping screen technology on the high-end models.
Similarly, Samsung is uncertain about launching the next generation of the Galaxy Z TriFold, its nearly $3,000 triple-folding smartphone. However, Choi revealed that the company is developing a version of the Galaxy Z Fold with a wider screen aspect ratio, possibly similar to a foldable iPhone.
The future of ultra-thin smartphones
Last year, Samsung unveiled the Galaxy S25 Edge, which is only 5.8 mm thin, aiming to preempt Apple before the iPhone Air was released. According to Choi, sales of this model were "significantly lower than other product lines."
A Samsung representative revealed that the company is reassessing the future of the device and is uncertain about launching a successor.
"People have different preferences, requirements, and criteria when choosing devices. We haven't decided when to launch our next product yet; that possibility is still under consideration," Choi said.
Although slightly thicker, the S25 Edge features two rear cameras and stereo speakers, compared to a single camera and speaker on the iPhone Air. Sales of the ultra-thin iPhone version were also lower than other models in the iPhone 17 lineup.
Many rumors suggest that Samsung once developed the Galaxy S26 Edge to replace the Plus version. However, due to poor sales of the S25 Edge, the company canceled that model and brought back the S26+.

The foldable smartphone segment continues to attract significant attention. At the end of January, Samsung became the first company to sell a triple-folding smartphone in the US. Priced at $2,900 , the Galaxy Z TriFold quickly sold out on its website. The company is also currently gathering user feedback.
"As the head of R&D (research and development), I didn't want to do it at first," Choi shared. According to Bloomberg , this was just a joke, referring to the technical complexity and the need to create many new components.
Despite its impressive engineering, the Z TriFold's exorbitant price limited its market appeal, ultimately targeting only the luxury segment. Furthermore, its considerable weight and thickness when folded also presented problems.
"Initially, we were kind of creating a new segment and pouring all our existing expertise into it. Now, we're wondering whether we should develop the next generation," Choi shared, admitting that a decision hasn't been made yet.
With the Galaxy Z Fold, a new version is certain to launch in the middle of this year. Samsung representatives also mentioned the possibility of the company launching a Z Fold version with a wider screen aspect ratio, offering some of the value that the Z TriFold possesses at a lower price.
"Some people are only interested in the work experience, others just want to watch Netflix or YouTube on a larger screen. If it has a screen aspect ratio similar to TriFold, the device will be optimized for those experiences," Choi emphasized the importance of providing users with more options.
Ambitions regarding the S Pen
Choi also revealed that the secure screen, one of the standout features of the Galaxy S26 Ultra, was actually launched a year later than planned.
When activated, the screen will appear dimmer when viewed from an angle. This is achieved by a mechanism that turns off the wide-angle illuminated pixels.
Thanks to software integration, the feature can be activated when a specific app is launched, even automatically masking the password input area or notifications, while the rest remains clearly visible.

According to a Samsung representative, the idea for developing anti-peeping screen technology was proposed by an engineer 3-4 years ago. The project officially launched 3 years ago with support from Samsung Display.
This feature is currently only available on the S26 Ultra. However, Choi doesn't rule out the possibility of bringing it to other devices in the future.
"When the technology is truly perfected and the time is right, we will consider integrating it into other product lines," Choi said.
The most disappointing aspect of the S26 Ultra is its S Pen stylus. This was once a standout feature on the Galaxy Note and later the S Ultra. The accessory hasn't received any feature upgrades in the latest generation.
However, a Samsung representative revealed that the company is developing the next version of the S Pen along with a new screen structure, which will address some of the limitations currently present on the S26 Ultra.
"The S Pen will continue to be one of our core technologies," Choi emphasized.
