Shaw was right about the toxic environment at MU.

Defender Luke Shaw has admitted the atmosphere at Manchester United has become toxic and unhealthy in recent years, and he supports manager Ruben Amorim's tough approach to improving the club's culture.

Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, and Jadon Sancho are partly responsible for the toxic atmosphere at Manchester United.

Speaking during the pre-season tour of the US, Shaw told The Times that the situation at Old Trafford has deteriorated over the past few years, and it's time for a radical change at the club. The 30-year-old defender pointed out: “It’s not hard to see how bad things are at the club. Over the past few years, the environment at Manchester United has been very negative. Everything has become toxic, unhealthy.”

Current situation

Shaw also emphasized that players like him need a positive, energetic, and happy environment to be able to play freely and express themselves better. However, the reality at Manchester United has been quite the opposite in recent years, with a gloomy atmosphere often pervading the dressing room.

Although he didn't directly mention the culprit behind the "toxic" atmosphere at the club, Shaw acknowledged that the dressing room is currently very united and everyone has to put the team first. "Everyone needs to understand that we have to get through this together. No one is being careless in the group of players anymore. The manager has made it clear that everyone needs to put the team first," he added.

The Guardian believes that at Old Trafford over the years, players like Marcus Rashford (who recently moved to Barcelona), Alejandro Garnacho, and Jadon Sancho have been partly responsible for the toxic atmosphere at Manchester United. This has led manager Amorim to be decisive in overhauling the squad, including getting rid of the three aforementioned players.

Rashford was once an icon of Manchester United both on and off the pitch. However, in recent years, his behavior has been the subject of much controversy.

She has only successfully gotten rid of Rashford so far.

Last year, Rashford was dropped from the squad for holding a birthday party after the 0-3 defeat against Manchester City, an action deemed unprofessional by manager Ruben Amorim. Rashford has also been criticized on numerous occasions for his declining form and inappropriate attitude.

Shaw, in an interview with The Times , didn't directly mention Rashford, but implied that such behavior contributes to undermining team spirit. Alejandro Garnacho was once expected to inherit Cristiano Ronaldo's role, but faced questions about his attitude and form in the second half of the 2024/25 season.

Even after the defeat to Tottenham in the Europa League final, Garnacho publicly expressed his displeasure with manager Amorim and was subsequently dropped from the starting lineup. Shaw emphasized that "if you don't do it right, you won't play," implying that Garnacho and other players had not brought the necessary positivity to the team.

Amorim's efforts

Garnacho's attitude, which was perceived as lacking commitment and not fitting into the new culture Amorim was building, made the young talent part of the problem rather than the solution.

Jadon Sancho, who was signed by Man United for £73 million from Borussia Dortmund in 2021, is another example of how personal attitudes can harm a team.

Sancho is stuck at Manchester United.

The conflict between Sancho and manager Erik ten Hag in the summer of 2024, when he was dropped from the squad due to poor form, even led to the young talent publicly expressing his displeasure on social media. Since then, Sancho has had no future at Manchester United.

The toxic atmosphere at Manchester United over the years has not only resulted from poor performance but also from how the players interact with each other and with the coaching staff. Rashford, Garnacho, and Sancho, to varying degrees, have created problems with attitude, discipline, and commitment, undermining team spirit.

Since taking office in November 2024, manager Amorim has dropped several veteran players, including the three mentioned above, as part of a restructuring effort. Shaw supports this decision, arguing that "everyone needs to put the team first," but also acknowledges that the damage from the previous culture is significant.

Of course, the toxic atmosphere at Manchester United isn't the product of a few individuals, but Rashford, Garnacho, and Sancho have contributed significantly to exacerbating the problem. From unprofessional behavior and negative attitudes to conflicts with the coaching staff, these three players have become symbols of what needs to change at Old Trafford. Under Amorim's leadership, Man United is working to rebuild the team culture.
