Superman can't fly or jump in Vietnamese theaters.

After nearly a week in Vietnamese theaters, Superman has grossed 18 billion VND – a low revenue figure compared to the film's popularity in the US market.

In Vietnamese cinemas, starting July 18th, F1 is also being brought back to IMAX theaters because it seems Superman isn't filling the IMAX screening slots as expected. Throughout the past week, the film has been successively overtaken for the number one spot at the Vietnamese box office by The Wooden Fish and The Smurfs.

The general situation in the markets

According to Box Office Vietnam, as of noon on July 18th, after nearly a week in theaters, Superman had grossed 17.9 billion VND in Vietnam.

According to The Numbers , the film grossed $166 million in the US last weekend, while it grossed $95 million in other countries, bringing its total revenue to $261 million.

In the US, the film's revenue is considered high, having the third best opening weekend of the year after the two biggest hits of the year, A Minecraft Movie and Lilo & Stitch (which recently reached the billion-dollar mark). But to be profitable, Superman needs to maintain stable revenue in the following weeks and reach a total of at least $500-$600 million globally.

Nguyen Khanh Duong, founder of Box Office Vietnam, a box office statistics unit, told Tuoi Tre Online : "Actually, if you follow the international box office, Superman this time didn't have good revenue globally."

Excluding North America, Superman 's box office revenue was moderate in other markets . In China, Superman ranked only fourth with low revenue.

Therefore, I think the low box office revenue of Superman in Vietnam is a common situation worldwide , and the film wasn't as popular internationally as the distributor had hoped."

Superman couldn't save Hollywood movies in Vietnam.

Before Superman was released, another Hollywood hit was also shown in Vietnam: Jurassic World: Reborn. Its global revenue was $564 million, while its revenue in Vietnam was only 40 billion VND.

Brad Pitt's F1 is a sensation, grossing $399 million globally, but in Vietnam it only earned a meager 12 billion VND. A slightly better case is How to Train Your Dragon, with a global revenue of $570 million and revenue of 66 billion VND in Vietnam.

Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning grossed $584 million worldwide, and nearly 47 billion VND in Vietnam.

"In the last one or two years, Hollywood films have struggled to create a box office boom in Vietnam. We may see a shift in the target audience, as those who prefer Western films increasingly prioritize waiting for releases on online platforms."

Meanwhile, the majority of moviegoers appreciate Vietnamese products that embody Vietnamese culture," Mr. Khanh Duong commented.

Therefore, the phenomenon of a "small" Vietnamese film like the short film "Wooden Fish School" unexpectedly surpassing "Superman" could continue to happen in the near future.
