This was Sinner's 22nd consecutive victory, but only his first since returning from a three-month suspension by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).
Sinner's return was emotional and sweet as he was warmly welcomed by fans at Campo Centrale.
"It's great to be back on the pitch after such a long time and it's great to have such great support from everyone. It's a special feeling. I'm so happy to be back," Sinner said.
The Italian press also eagerly welcomed the return of the "pride of Italian tennis". The Corriere dello Sport headlined: "Day of the Sinner". In the article, the newspaper commented: "The wait is over. Today, Rome welcomes... the strongest Italian tennis player of all time".
With this victory, Sinner will advance to the third round and his opponent is world ranked 93rd Jesper de Jong.
Sinner is likely to continue winning to aim for his 20th ATP title in his career. It is known that the Italian Open is the last Masters 1000 tournament before the 2025 French Open starts later this month.
