Ninth-grade students from Nguyen Du Secondary School (District 1, Ho Chi Minh City). This is also the first group of candidates taking the 10th-grade entrance exam under the new exam structure.

Structure and format of the 10th grade Vietnamese language exam.

Scope of assessment: The required reading comprehension and writing skills in the 2018 General Education Program for lower secondary schools, primarily grades 8 and 9.

Reading Comprehension Section

  • Source: Non-textbook materials
  • Text type: Literary text, and one of two types: Argumentative text or informational text.
  • Length: The total length of the texts in the exam should not exceed 1,300 words.

Write

a) Write a paragraph (approximately 200 words). One of the following two requirements must be met:

  • Write a paragraph expressing your feelings about a poem or a stanza of a poem.
  • Write a paragraph analyzing the thematic content, the distinctive artistic features of the work, and its aesthetic effect.

b) Write an essay. One of the following two requirements must be met:

  • Write an argumentative essay on a social issue, clearly presenting the problem and the writer's opinion (agreement or disagreement) on that issue; provide convincing arguments and evidence.
  • Write an argumentative essay on a problem that needs solving; present feasible and persuasive solutions.

Part 1 (5.0 points): Reading comprehension of literary texts and writing a paragraph

Structure and format of the 10th grade math exam.

Scope of assessment: The 2018 General Education Program for Mathematics at the lower secondary level includes the following knowledge areas: Geometry and measurement; Numbers and algebra; Statistics and probability.

The test aims to assess mathematical abilities: mathematical thinking and reasoning; mathematical problem-solving; and mathematical modeling.

Assessment orientation: Students should be able to apply learned knowledge to solve real-world problems. Encouragement should focus on self-learning and creativity, avoiding rote memorization and memorization.

The assessment content aims to help students identify some of the necessary knowledge and skills for entering high school.

Structure and format of the 10th grade English exam.

The assessment of language proficiency should not be based solely on students' rote memorization of grammar and vocabulary; it must also assess their ability to understand and apply language knowledge in appropriate contexts, especially in real-life situations.

Changes in assessment methods need to be synchronized with the use of appropriate teaching materials, and the teaching and learning of English should shift from primarily using the Grammar Translation or Direct Method to combining it with the Communicative Approach and applying language to real-life situations.

Focus the assessment on specific language skills, setting specific goals for each knowledge area.

Scope of evaluation:

Phonetics: Pronunciation of basic vowels and consonants; Correct stress placement; Vocabulary and grammar: Diverse vocabulary types and word meanings according to the curriculum; Grammar points according to the curriculum.

Communication, relating to real-life situations, the ability to understand and respond to simple situations in practical language.

Reading Comprehension: Read a text of 180-200 words and find the information; Read and fill in the blanks in a text of 80-100 words.

Writing: Write words in the correct form to complete meaningful sentences; Write simple sentences based on given information; Write sentences using grammatical structure and word combination skills.
