Parent Ho Van Hung asked: "My child is in 12th grade following the 2018 curriculum. In class, my child doesn't study chemistry and biology. However, the aptitude test includes chemistry and biology. So how will my child be able to take the exam?"

Assessing the basic competencies of candidates for university studies.

According to Dr. Nguyen Quoc Chinh, Director of the Center for Testing and Quality Assessment of Training at the Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City, the orientation of the Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City's aptitude test is to assess the basic competencies of candidates for university studies.

Previously, the exam focused on language skills, mathematical ability, data analysis, and problem-solving. Problem-solving sections would ask questions about fields such as chemistry, physics, biology, history, and geography. However, many students in the 2018 general education program did not study all five subjects, giving them a much broader range of choices.

Therefore, the exam structure has been adjusted, replacing the "problem-solving" component with a " scientific thinking" component. This will assess logical reasoning, data analysis, and scientific inference.

The problems presented here are not specialized in physics, chemistry, biology, history, or geography, but rather practical problems related to science, technology, society, economics , and law.

"Therefore, all candidates do not necessarily need to have in-depth knowledge of physics, chemistry, biology, history, geography, etc., to still be able to use their reasoning abilities and scientific thinking skills to answer the questions."

"This approach is also similar to international standardized tests such as the SAT (USA), Psychometric Entrance Test (Israel), and General Aptitude Test (Thailand)," Mr. Chinh said.

The structure of the competency assessment exam remains stable and has been adjusted to align with the 2018 general education curriculum.

The aptitude test does not require in-depth study of the subjects.

From 2025 onwards, the test has been adjusted to be more like the SAT, assessing the most basic abilities, especially the scientific thinking skills necessary for all test-takers.

Accordingly, the Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City will maintain the structure of the language and mathematics sections, while increasing the number of questions in these two sections to enhance the reliability and discrimination of the exam.

The logic - data analysis and problem solving section is restructured into a scientific thinking section to assess candidates' ability in logic and scientific reasoning when solving real-life situations in the fields of science, technology, economics and society.

Questions belonging to the scientific thinking group are about differences. This section includes issues related to science, society, technology, and life, and does not concern knowledge specific to individual subjects such as physics, chemistry, biology, history, geography, economics, and law.

The questions provide complete information in the form of data, facts, formulas, definitions, processes, and experimental results. Candidates rely on logical thinking and scientific reasoning to find the rules and solutions.

According to Mr. Chinh, the exam structure for 2026 will remain stable as in 2025, and the content of the exam questions will continue to be improved and refined in line with international standardization, ensuring reliability and high discriminatory power.

"The exam provides sufficient information and facts to ensure that candidates can complete the test. The questions are linked to practical contexts and multiple fields; they provide necessary data and formulas. Candidates use the facts provided in the exam to deduce patterns and solve problems. This does not require candidates to have in-depth knowledge of the subjects but rather relies on their reading comprehension and reasoning abilities," Mr. Chinh added.
