Following the National Assembly 's approval of the amended Education Law, Tuoi Tre Online received numerous inquiries from parents with children in 9th grade in Ho Chi Minh City, asking whether the city would abolish the 10th grade entrance exam after the abolition of the junior high school graduation certificate.
In response to the question, a leader from the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training stated: "The issuance of junior high school diplomas aims to confirm that 9th-grade students have completed the junior high school program. The 10th-grade entrance exam, on the other hand, aims to select students who have completed the junior high school program to attend public high schools. These two things are completely different. Therefore, Ho Chi Minh City will still conduct the 10th-grade entrance exam for the 2026-2027 school year as planned."
Specifically, the 10th grade admission process will be conducted in two ways: selection based on academic records in some special areas such as island communes and special zones; and an entrance exam in three subjects: literature, mathematics, and a foreign language.
Candidates applying for specialized 10th-grade classes will take a fourth subject, which is their specialized subject. Candidates applying for integrated 10th-grade classes will take a fourth subject, which is the integrated subject (if the lower secondary level did not have an integrated curriculum).
According to the same leader, the 10th grade entrance exam in Ho Chi Minh City is expected to take place in early June 2026. This will be the first 10th grade entrance exam after Ho Chi Minh City's merger.
Previously, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training announced the structure and sample exam questions for the three subjects in the 2026 10th grade entrance exam.
Literature subject: the exam is designed with an integrated approach that assesses both reading comprehension and writing skills; the content in the writing section is related to the text in the reading comprehension section.
Mathematics: The exam content is based on the 2018 general education curriculum for junior high school mathematics, covering the following areas: Geometry and measurement; numbers and algebra; statistics and probability. The test aims to assess mathematical abilities such as mathematical thinking and reasoning, mathematical problem-solving, and mathematical modeling.
English subject: The assessment focuses on specific language skills, with specific goals for each knowledge area.
The structure of the 10th grade English exam consists of 4 sections with 40 questions.
Part 1 (1 point): Phonetics, questions 1 to 4. Part 2 (3 points): Vocabulary, grammar, communication, questions 5 to 16. Part 3 (4 points): Writing the correct form of words, questions 29 to 34; Writing appropriate phrases based on given information, questions 35, 36; Writing sentences, questions 37 to 40.
