Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said this was "a historic moment" that brought India into the group of nations possessing this advanced military technology.
According to AFP , the test was conducted at Abdul Kalam Island off the eastern coast on the evening of November 16. Video footage released by India's Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) shows a missile launching into the night sky, followed by a large trail of fire.
Hypersonic missiles are considered the most advanced missile technology currently available because of their ability to fly lower, making them harder to detect than conventional ballistic missiles, their faster approach to targets, and their ability to change targets during flight. Currently, only the US, Russia, China, and North Korea have successfully tested this type of missile, while several other countries are developing similar technology.
The test took place just days after China showcased its expanded military aviation capabilities at an air show, with the debut of the J-35A stealth fighter jet, attack drones, and the HQ-19 surface-to-air missile system, designed to intercept ballistic missiles and hypersonic glide vehicles.
New Delhi is currently one of Russia's biggest arms customers, purchasing weapons including the S-400 missile defense system, despite the risk of US sanctions.
