Golden eagles were common in Britain until populations began to decline in the 18th century, due to illegal killing by shepherds and shooting by gamekeepers in the 19th century. By 1850, the golden eagle had become extinct in England and Wales, and in Ireland by 1912, although they have recently returned with numbers of between 400 and 500 breeding pairs. The choice of golden eagle bones may have been significant, the researchers say. The brooch may have represented a personal item worn by the individual in life. Burial of them represented an offering to accompany the individual into the afterlife , and they are thought to represent personal or social connections between the deceased and the objects themselves.
