(CLO) For two consecutive years, Sudan has topped the list of countries with the worst humanitarian situation in the world, compiled by the aid organization International Rescue Organization (IRC).
The conflict between the army and another armed group in Sudan, which began in April 2023, has caused immense suffering for the people. At least 61,000 people have been killed, and that number could be even higher.
The United Nations says the conflict has displaced 11 million people and caused the world's biggest famine crisis. Nearly 25 million people, or half Sudan's population, are in need of aid.

Conflict in Gaza and worsening situations in the West Bank, Myanmar, Syria, and South Sudan are the next countries likely to face a humanitarian crisis by 2025.
Lebanon, Burkina Faso, Haiti, Mali, Somalia, Afghanistan, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Niger, Nigeria, Ukraine, and Yemen are also among the countries likely to face a worsening situation in the coming year.
"With millions of people displaced and even more in need of assistance, it is more important than ever for the world to pay attention to this crisis. Let's not turn our backs on what is happening in Sudan," the IRC said in an Instagram post.
IRC CEO David Wright Miliband said the list aims to call for global action.
The report "The World Is Out of Balance" states that more than 305 million people worldwide need humanitarian assistance, with the countries on the list accounting for 82% of that number.
The crisis in Sudan is the largest since the report began documenting conflicts and wars more than 15 years ago, accounting for 10% of all people in need of aid globally.
