However, he is not invincible, which gives the film more emotional weight and dramatic tension.
James Gunn chose a different path with Superman – a vibrant, intelligent, and emotional reboot. He understood that audiences were tired of the old superhero formula, and therefore Superman was striving to redefine the entire concept of comic book adaptations.
Both strong and deeply emotional.
In some respects, James Gunn's Superman retains the familiar hallmarks of traditional superhero films. It still features earth-shattering battles, giant monsters, space jumps, and the signature ballistic magic of the genre.
However, the most valuable aspect of the new Superman is how the film returns to the character's original spirit – just like in the comics and the first two films starring Christopher Reeve: a noble symbol representing justice, strong yet fragile, superhuman yet human, constantly struggling with his own inner conflict.

For anyone taking on this iconic role, it's essential to exude the handsome, upright, and quintessential "American heartthrob" image.
But what distinguishes a memorable Superman is his inner depth: the humor, the anxieties, the touch of doubt beneath that superhuman exterior.
What about David Corenswet? In James Gunn's hands, he delivers a Superman with wavy hair, bright eyes, and unwavering enthusiasm. He conveys the joy of saving the world but also clearly shows his psychological vulnerability.
What is Superman's true mission?
Superman opens with a surprising moment. Instead of fighting enemies or soaring through the sky, the film begins with him bleeding in the snow. Superman has broken 14 bones and needs to absorb solar radiation to heal. Audiences were warned beforehand that this would be a more battered Superman than usual.
The antagonist is Lex Luthor (played by Nicholas Hoult), a character who is both cold and unpredictable. The character is reimagined as a fascist tech billionaire and CEO of LutherCorp, whose influence extends to the American industrial and political systems, as well as many other countries.

And while still a star in the superhero world, Superman now has to share the spotlight with other "metahumans," most notably the Justice Gang, consisting of the fiery Green Lantern, the sharp-witted Hawkgirl, and the cool-headed Mister Terrific played by Edi Gathegi.
For much of the film, Superman is passively trapped inside a transparent cube within a fictional space portal created by Luthor, like a prison in the middle of the galaxy.

Superman 's sheer intensity and overwhelming detail are both its strength and its weakness. The film rarely slows down long enough for the characters to truly reflect on their inner turmoil or the increasingly complex realities surrounding them.
What is Superman's true mission? Was he sent to Earth to protect or to lead? That question haunts him throughout the film, and David Corenswet, with his eyes wavering between a smile and pain, portrays it convincingly.
James Gunn has created a superhero world that is both complex and moving, sometimes overwhelming but impossible to take your eyes off the screen.
But one big question still hangs over the entire new DC universe: Even if you build such a solid and compelling foundation, will audiences actually go to the theaters?
