When voting to elect 33 representatives to the island's parliament, approximately 40,000 voters not only chose members for the new parliament to decide on the new autonomous government, but also expressed their stance on world politics directly related to the island – specifically, President Donald Trump's intention to buy the island for the United States. In a recent speech before both houses of the US legislature, Trump declared that the US has strategic security interests in this ice island and will reclaim it "one way or another." Therefore, this year's parliamentary election on the island is essentially a referendum on independence or dependence, on whether "Greenland people are Greenlanders, or Danish citizens, or American citizens."

This small election therefore has a significant impact because the results will also be the answer from the islanders regarding Trump's ambitions to expand the United States' territory. According to recent opinion polls, the vast majority of people on Greenland want to maintain their autonomy and move towards independence, not wanting the island to become part of either Denmark or the United States.
