According to Yonhap, the multiple accidents occurred near the Shinnyeong Interchange on the Sangju-Yeongcheon Expressway in Yeongcheon City at around 3:12 a.m. on November 17. At that time, a tanker carrying 24,000 liters of bunker C oil crashed into the back of a 25-ton cargo truck, leading to a collision involving multiple other vehicles, police said.
In it, a 14-ton truck crashed into the back of a tanker truck, leading to a series of consecutive collisions between 7 other vehicles, including a passenger car and a bus.

Additionally, several H-beams loaded on a truck fell onto the oncoming lane, causing further collisions between a passenger bus, another tanker truck and a 13-ton cargo truck as they tried to avoid the falling objects.
Police said two bus drivers and a truck driver were killed and four others were injured in the crash. About 20 passengers on the bus were unhurt.
The accident caused fires in 3 vehicles, including a tanker truck, a 14-ton truck and a 2.5-ton truck. However, the fire was completely extinguished after 2 hours and 30 minutes.
Police added that oil from one of the tankers involved in the accident had leaked into nearby rice fields and waterways.
Authorities have opened an investigation into the incident.
