According to Instant Digital, a well-known leaker on Weibo, Apple is looking to produce protective cases for its Pro models that directly integrate touch-based sensor layers.
The leaker doesn't provide any further details, but there are some clues that can be found in Apple's previous research. A patent application filed by the company in 2024 describes a "case with an input for an electronic device" and outlines a protective iPhone case designed to act as an contact surface rather than passive shielding.

The document describes touch-sensitive areas built into the case — using capacitive or pressure sensors — that can trigger actions normally handled by the phone's physical buttons. When the case is attached, the iPhone will detect and reroute the behavior of the buttons so that tapping, pressing, or sliding on the case will trigger system functions.
The patent also details how the case would communicate with the device, including recognition and transmission of signals via interfaces like NFC. Some versions would also include biometric input features, such as allowing the Touch ID fingerprint sensor in the case to unlock features on the phone.
The filings suggest that Apple has considered using cases as an extension of the iPhone's control system. What makes this idea even more relevant, however, is that Apple is rumored to be working on a bezel-less iPhone. Apple is said to be pursuing a completely new design for its 20th anniversary iPhone, with a display that curves around all four sides.

This approach leaves little room for mechanical buttons. In fact, there have been reports that Apple may switch to solid-state capacitive layers on the anniversary model, allowing for a visually seamless design that would make the interactive case a natural companion.
A case with a touch-sensitive area could move functions like volume and camera controls to larger, more usable surfaces, while minimizing accidental edge touches on an all-screen design. In fact, the case could provide haptic cues and pressure-based controls that would otherwise be hindered on a bezel-less, button-only iPhone without a regular case.
Of course, whether Apple is developing an interactive iPhone case in connection with the anniversary model remains speculative at this point, but the convergence of rumors opens up a host of other interesting possibilities for the device, which is expected to launch in the fall of 2027.
