Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park ( Quang Binh ) was recognized by the World Heritage Committee - UNESCO as a World Natural Heritage in 2003, with an area of over 123,000 hectares, and is one of the 200 most important ecosystems in the world. This national park is not only famous for its cave system and stalactites but also has great biological value. This is the primary forest with the largest coverage rate among the special-use forests in our country with many rare species of flora and fauna, especially the Indochinese Tiger.

Over the years, the Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park Management Board has been making efforts to protect forests and prevent biodiversity crimes.

The biodiversity here is not only in terms of rarity but also in terms of genetic resources. According to statistics, Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park records 2,953 plant species, of which 121 species are recorded in the IUCN Red Book and 111 species are in the Vietnam Red Book.

Regarding animals, Phong Nha - Ke Bang has an extremely rich fauna with the presence of 1,394 species, of which 116 species are listed in the IUCN Red Book, 82 species are listed in the Vietnam Red Book. In addition, the Park has dozens of species listed in the emergency protection appendix, prohibiting all forms of hunting, trapping and trading by the Government and international conservation organizations. Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park has a diverse habitat system, especially limestone mountains and caves, so it is a shelter for many primate species. According to records, the total number of primate species in this Park accounts for 42% of the total number of primate species in Vietnam.

Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park has a large buffer zone located in 3 districts of Quang Ninh, Minh Hoa, Bo Trach, with nearly 69 thousand people living there, mainly Chut and Bru-Van Kieu ethnic groups. People living around the buffer zone of the Park have a difficult life, mainly depending on the forest. They exploit animals and plants from the forest, so biological conservation work here is also difficult.

Therefore, the Park Management Board has implemented many different solutions such as sustainable economic development based on eco-tourism, increasing livelihoods for people in the buffer zone to reduce pressure on the forest. In particular, the Park Management Board coordinates with localities around the Park's buffer zone to carry out propaganda and education work to raise people's awareness of biodiversity conservation, preventing the trade of wild animals and rare plants.

Propaganda is implemented through village activities, direct propaganda sessions, leaflets, documents, media publications, and organizing extracurricular activities at schools with content on forest and wildlife management and protection.

Along with that, we coordinate with schools to bring educational topics on forest protection and wildlife protection to students. Mass organizations such as women's unions and youth unions are also exposed to these communication activities. Since then, people's awareness has changed positively, and their sense of responsibility in forest protection has been enhanced.
Previously, people only relied on slash-and-burn farming, secretly entering the forest to exploit forest products, and hunting animals. Now they have new livelihoods such as participating in adventure tours and eco-tourism in the Park. Many people are supported by forest environmental services to buy crops and livestock for economic development. In particular, by the end of 2022, Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park has 29 village and hamlet forest protection teams in the buffer zone. This force has actively joined the staff of the National Park and Forest Rangers in patrolling, detecting illegal forest encroachment, protecting forests and wildlife, and establishing community communication teams on biodiversity conservation, preventing crimes of buying and selling wild animals and rare plants.

In the coming time, the Park will implement the upgrade, management and operation of the SMART software system in forest protection patrols, biodiversity monitoring, innovate patrol and control methods, focus on early detection and prevention to limit biodiversity crimes.
