After Google announced a major change to its search engine, Page and Brin's fortunes also skyrocketed. Together, they recorded an increase of more than $18 billion this week. Specifically, Page added $9.4 billion to $106.9 billion, while Brin increased $8.9 billion to $102.1 billion, according to Bloomberg 's billionaire ranking. Bloomberg said this was the biggest weekly increase since February 2021.
Google will begin testing AI integration into its search engine and open its AI chatbot, Bard, to more than 180 countries and territories, further cementing the company’s dominance of internet search. Shares of Alphabet, Google’s parent company, rose nearly 1% on Friday after rising 8.6% over the previous two days.
Page and Brin have become more involved in Google’s operations since the launch of OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which threatens to overtake Google as the search leader. This year alone, the two billionaires have each made more than $22 billion thanks to the global AI craze. They are ranked 8th and 9th, respectively, on Bloomberg’s list of the world’s richest people.
Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt is also a beneficiary of the AI boom. He has invested in startups in the field and has resisted calls to halt AI research due to concerns that China will make advances. Much of his $23.6 billion fortune is tied to Alphabet, where he is the third-largest individual shareholder. This week, his net worth increased by $1.8 billion.
