According to AFP news agency on October 1, Meta announced that it will take advantage of conversations between users and artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots to personalize ads and content displayed on Facebook and Instagram, starting from December 16, 2025.
Users will be notified of this change from October 7 and will not be able to opt out of Meta collecting data from AI chat, but will be able to adjust the level of personalization of ads and content on the news feed.
According to Meta, this update will allow any interaction with Meta AI — via voice or text — to be used in the same way the platform currently tracks likes, shares, or posts, to determine user interests and show ads that are likely to have the highest impact.
For example, if a user chats with a chatbot about outdoor activities, they might see suggestions for climbing groups, posts from friends about trails, or ads for climbing gear.
There are now more than 1 billion people using Meta AI across Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.
Christy Harris, Meta's director of data policy and privacy, stressed that the early announcement was intended to be "absolutely transparent" and give users time to prepare.
Meta said the change will roll out across most regions, while Europe and the UK – which have stricter data regulations – will follow later.
The company also confirmed that it will not use conversations related to sensitive topics such as religion, sexual orientation, political views and health for advertising purposes.
Meta launched its first consumer smart glasses with a built-in display last month at its annual Connect Conference, according to Reuters.
Meta's use of AI interactions for advertising comes as other tech giants, including Google and Amazon, have begun monetizing AI tools, often through cloud computing services.
But few companies are leveraging AI conversational interactions to personalize content and advertising across multiple platforms at the scale that Meta is doing.
