The awarding ceremony was conducted by Prof. Dr. Quarraisha Abdool Karim, President of TWAS, in the presence of more than 300 international scientists at the 17th TWAS conference held in Brazil (taking place from September 29 to October 2).

Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai was born in 1974, from Quang Ngai , graduated in Chemistry from Ho Chi Minh City University of Science (now Ho Chi Minh City University of Science). She was awarded the title of Associate Professor in 2014, Professor in 2020.

She is one of the leading scientists in the research and development of drugs from Vietnamese medicinal herbs. Her research team has successfully developed two products to support the treatment of gastrointestinal cancer and arthritis from domestic herbs. To date, she has published more than 80 works in prestigious international scientific journals.

Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai has been awarded many noble prizes: Certificates of Merit from the Prime Minister, Ministry of Education and Training, Medal "For the cause of education ", prestigious Kovalevskaia Prize for female scientists in the field of natural sciences.

Major General, Professor, Dr. Nguyen The Hoang graduated as a General Practitioner from the Military Medical Academy (1987), defended his Doctorate in Medicine at the University of Munich, Germany (1997). He was appointed Associate Professor in 2006, and Professor in 2018.

He used to be the Deputy Director of Hospital 108, in charge of the field of surgery, surgical safety and procedures. In his leadership role, he and the Board of Directors built the hospital's development strategy according to the orientation of "Specialization - Dedication - International reach".

As a leading expert in orthopedic trauma and microsurgery, Professor Nguyen The Hoang has published dozens of scientific works in prestigious international journals and received many important scientific awards.

He has received many awards, most notably the Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Scientific Research Award from the German Academy of Sciences Alexander von Humboldt (2012).

TWAS (The World Academy of Sciences) is an international scientific organization under UNESCO, established in 1983, bringing together more than 1,400 outstanding scientists from more than 100 countries. This organization has been recognized by the United Nations since 1985 and is currently an associate member of the International Science Council (ISC).

In 2025, TWAS will elect 74 new members - the largest number in its history. Brazil and China lead the way (10 members each), followed by India (9), Malaysia (7), and South Africa (4). Vietnam, Cuba, Egypt, and the United States each have two new members. The decision takes effect from January 1, 2025, bringing the total number of TWAS members to 1,444.
