In the 85th minute, the captain of U22 Laos, Phetdavanh, made a dangerous tackle on a player of U22 Malaysia. The referee immediately gave Phetdavanh a second yellow card. Not only was he sent off, the captain of U22 Laos also had to leave the field on a stretcher.

After being examined by doctors, the midfielder born in 2001 was determined to have a broken right leg. He received first aid, then was taken to the hospital by ambulance. Witnessing Phetdavanh's serious injury, the U22 Laos players were very worried.

Phetdavanh’s broken leg injury reminds many people of the image of striker Xuan Son in the second leg of the 2024 ASEAN Cup final between Vietnam and Thailand. In that match, Xuan Son tripped and broke his right leg, and was out of action for nearly 11 months.

With a 1-4 loss to U22 Malaysia, U22 Laos became the first team to be eliminated at SEA Games 33. In the opening match, the Million Elephants team lost 1-2 to U22 Vietnam.

The situation in Group B is only a race for the top spot and a direct ticket to the semi-finals between U22 Vietnam and U22 Malaysia. Before the match considered as the "final", coach Nafuzi Zain of U22 Malaysia declared: "We cannot lose, but will win against U22 Vietnam".
