Passion and dedication
Brũ-Xinh's journey into journalism began in 2011 when he and two other ethnic minority students were selected by Vietnam Television (VTV) in collaboration with Quang Tri province to receive intermediate-level journalism training. Upon completing the course, he was assigned to work at the Huong Hoa District Radio and Television Station (now the District Cultural, Sports and Tourism Center).
For over 13 years as a grassroots reporter, he had the opportunity to travel extensively, especially to remote villages in the district, to gather information for his articles. As a member of an ethnic minority group, Brũ-Xinh understands better than anyone the difficulties local people face in accessing information through media channels. Therefore, in carrying out his propaganda duties, he actively learns from the experience of his colleagues and independently explores ways to convey information to the people in a timely, accessible, and easily understandable manner.
As a mountainous district with nearly 50% of its population being ethnic minorities, to enhance the role and effectiveness of propaganda through the local radio system, since 2021, Bru-Xinh has been assigned to be in charge of the Bru-Van Kieu language radio program. He translates and broadcasts the programs, and uploads them to the website of the District's Culture, Sports and Tourism Center. This has significantly contributed to meeting the information needs of the people, bringing many practical benefits and positively impacting the process of building new rural areas in remote regions.
He is always deeply concerned about each news item and article he compiles in the Van Kieu language, aiming to help the local people truly understand and grasp the information, thereby applying it to their daily lives, especially in efficient farming and livestock raising, contributing to increased income and sustainable poverty reduction.
To perform his job well, he actively participated in training courses on the Brũ-Vân Kiều language and writing system; he also taught himself journalism skills in ethnic minority areas through books, newspapers, and the internet.
During his days off, Brũ-Xinh frequently visits the homes of village elders and respected figures in the community to communicate and convey the latest news to the villagers in the Brũ-Vân Kiều language. Not stopping there, he also connects himself with teachers knowledgeable in the Brũ-Vân Kiều language, both locally and outside the area, to further improve his writing skills. As a result, his vocabulary has become increasingly rich.
Due to the nature of his profession, Brũ-Xinh has the opportunity to delve deeply into the culture of the Vân Kiều ethnic group, including: distinctive features of their traditional social institutions; religion and beliefs; customs and traditions; housing; clothing; cuisine; music , etc. From this, he not only has the opportunity to acquire extensive knowledge of the Brũ-Vân Kiều language but also to breathe life into the Brũ-Vân Kiều radio programs that he himself translates.
Brũ-Xinh shared: “When I first started working on the Brũ-Vân Kiều language radio program, I felt very worried because my vocabulary and experience were limited. Furthermore, in daily communication, due to interaction with the Kinh people, each sentence spoken by the people only retained less than 50% of its original meaning. The Brũ-Vân Kiều script, in particular, was developed very late and has not been widely disseminated within the Brũ-Vân Kiều ethnic group itself. Almost all the people cannot write their own script.”
Therefore, I encountered many difficulties during the translation process. But with passion, determination, and the motivation to ensure that people understood what I wanted to say and convey, I overcame the limitations and obstacles to perform my task to the best of my ability. I hope to open literacy classes for young people from ethnic minority communities in the future. Through this, the language of our people will be preserved and its value promoted, making an important contribution to the preservation of the culture of ethnic minorities.”

" The sweet fruits" of preserving the mother tongue.
The quality of the Brũ-Vân Kiều language radio program broadcast by the Culture, Sports and Tourism Center of Hướng Hóa district is constantly improving, making a positive impression on local listeners and becoming an important information channel in the social life of ethnic minority communities. The program contributes to encouraging people to enthusiastically participate in labor and production, and to work together to build new rural areas in the locality.
Thanks to this, the dissemination of information in the Van Kieu language through the radio system in the ethnic minority areas of Huong Hoa has become increasingly effective and necessary. This achievement is due to the tireless and dedicated contributions of Bru-Xinh over the years.
Mr. Pa Quyet from Tram village, Huong Tan commune, happily said: “Since the program in the Bru-Van Kieu language was broadcast on the village loudspeaker, we are very happy because everyone can listen and understand more easily, especially grasping a lot of important information about socio-economic development, national defense and security... From there, we actively encourage our families and relatives to implement the Party's guidelines, the State's policies and laws, and compete in building a new life.”

Not only did Brũ-Xinh innovate and improve the quality of the Brũ-Vân Kiều language radio program, but he also excelled at filming and editing videos, and writing news reports when assigned by his unit's leadership. In his free time, he dedicated himself to further studying folk songs.
He listens to each folk song many times, meticulously translates the lyrics, and then shares them on his personal Facebook and Zalo pages so that people with the same passion can exchange ideas, give feedback, and collect more. On his Facebook page, he regularly shares his daily life activities and information on culture, society, economics , and national defense and security, annotated in both Brũ-Vân Kiều script and Vietnamese. Through this, he contributes to spreading the love of the ethnic culture and language to more people.
With its assigned functions and tasks, the Huong Hoa District Cultural, Sports and Tourism Center has maintained and successfully produced two Brũ-Van Kieu language radio programs per month, which are then posted on the unit's website.
Furthermore, over 70% of the villages in the district have operational local radio broadcasting systems, fully equipped with loudspeakers reaching even the most remote hamlets. This program contributes to making the dissemination of information on production and daily life more accessible and practical for people in these areas. People can more easily access information and knowledge in various social fields, thereby contributing to building model new rural villages and communes.
Speaking about the dedicated reporter who is passionate about preserving the mother tongue at the unit, Nguyen Cong Sang, Deputy Director of the Culture, Sports and Tourism Center of Huong Hoa district, said: “Brũ-Xinh is a very responsible reporter. He always tries to attract more listeners. Therefore, the programs he produces are always fresh, with rich, diverse, and meaningful translated information. In particular, he focuses on exploiting information that brings practical benefits to the people in the ethnic minority areas in all aspects of social life.”
