Increase income through crop restructuring.

Việt NamViệt Nam27/03/2024

Over the years, many farming households in Phu Binh district have actively transformed their crop structure to suit the natural conditions. This has helped increase productivity and economic value per unit of cultivated land.

People in Bao Ly commune (Phu Binh district) are proactively switching to suitable crops on high-lying fields to increase their income.
People in Bao Ly commune (Phu Binh district) are proactively switching to suitable crops on high-lying fields to increase their income.

In Dinh hamlet, Bao Ly commune, Mr. Duong Nghia Sang's family is one of the pioneering households in transforming the crop structure on inefficient rice fields and garden land, bringing in high income. Mr. Sang shared: "My family has 8 sao (approximately 0.8 hectares) of rice fields, but they are fragmented and we cannot control the irrigation water. The garden area used to grow corn and cassava, but the economic efficiency was not high. Since 2014, I have renovated the entire rice-growing area and more than 1 hectare of garden land to plant about 7,000 banana trees, 500 pomelo trees, and 30 sapodilla trees. These crops adapt well to the soil and climate. In terms of economic efficiency, I earn much higher profits than growing rice. For example, on 1 sao of land, I harvest over 1.5 tons of bananas, selling them for nearly 11 million VND. After deducting investment and care costs, I earn a profit of over 8 million VND."

In Nha Long commune, the commune has encouraged the conversion of flooded areas or high-lying rice paddies to suitable crops. Mr. Nguyen Van Manh, Vice Chairman of the Commune People's Committee, stated: The commune's rice production area is 210 hectares. In the Spring crop of 2024, 20 hectares were converted to other crops, mainly vegetables, concentrated in the hamlets of Do, Nang, Mit, and Xum. Notably, the Nang hamlet has established a specialized vegetable farming area following VietGAP and organic farming standards.

In order to enhance land use value, the People's Committee of Phu Binh district has recently focused on directing specialized departments and communes and towns to regularly monitor the situation at the grassroots level and promote the conversion of crop structures among the people. This includes gradually reducing the area of low-yield crops, increasing the area of perennial crops, and converting low-yield rice land to other crops with higher economic value.

In addition, the District People's Committee also coordinated the implementation of models and projects to support people in developing high-economic-value crops suitable to natural conditions. A notable example is the project linking the value chain of high-quality vegetables. Accordingly, from 2021 to 2023, the district supported the implementation of a concentrated, specialized vegetable production model using greenhouse technology in Nha Long commune with a budget of 175 million VND; and a high-tech vegetable production model on a scale of 4,000m2 in Nha Long commune…

Additionally, there is a project to produce biomass corn on unproductive land for use as feed for beef cattle. In 2022-2023, the district implemented a biomass corn cultivation model in the communes of Bao Ly, Nga My, Thanh Ninh, Dao Xa, Ha Chau, etc., covering an area of 530 hectares.

Thanks to appropriate solutions, many farming households in the district have actively converted their low-yield rice land to annual crops, mainly vegetables. Several concentrated areas of specialized vegetable production have been established in the communes of Nha Long, Duong Thanh, Luong Phu, and Tan Duc.

For hilly and mixed-crop land areas, people are switching to planting perennial trees such as acacia and fruit trees. Currently, communes such as Tan Duc, Tan Kim, and Luong Phu are gradually developing large-scale fruit tree production areas.

Practical experience in production shows that areas where crop structure has been changed have yielded high economic efficiency. This has contributed to an increase in the value of agricultural products per hectare, reaching 123.5 million VND/ha, an increase of 5.05 million VND/ha compared to 2022.

To further enhance agricultural production value and land use efficiency, Phu Binh district continues to direct specialized departments to strengthen propaganda and guidance for farmers to convert low-yield rice and annual crop production areas to other suitable crops with high economic value and efficiency. At the same time, it focuses on directing communes and towns to guide and encourage people to develop production in a safe manner, emphasizing the application of science and technology...
