In addition to new generation surface combatants such as Gepard 3.9 missile frigates and Monliya fast attack missiles, the Vietnam People's Navy also uses many types of gunboats, missile boats, anti-submarine frigates, etc. that have been improved and upgraded.

These surface combat ships have been greatly improved and upgraded in terms of weapons and modern technical equipment. For many years, they have been on combat-ready duty in the combat ship brigades of the five naval regions of Vietnam.
Petya-class anti-submarine frigate and Pohang-class anti-submarine frigate
Petya-class anti-submarine frigates (Project 159) were provided to Vietnam by the former Soviet Union in the early 1980s.
Initially, these ships were assigned to Brigade 161. In mid-1987, when the situation in Truong Sa began to become tense, the anti-submarine frigates were transferred from Da Nang to Brigade 171 (then under Naval Region 4).
