Proper bikini hair removal

VnExpressVnExpress17/10/2023

Hair removal helps keep the genital area clean, reduces odor and the risk of infection, but it needs to be done correctly to avoid itching, inflammation, and irritation.

This article was professionally reviewed by Dr. Nguyen Thi Kieu Trang, Department of Dermatology and Cosmetic Skin Care, University Medical Center of Ho Chi Minh City.

Hair serves a protective and warming function for the bikini area. Improper hair removal can lead to several health risks.

Advantage:

- Helps keep the intimate area dry and comfortable during hot weather, reducing odor.

- Reduces the risk of infections and gynecological diseases.

- Create a sense of novelty for your partner and look better in your clothes.

Disadvantages:

- The skin in this area is sensitive and prone to redness. Improper hair removal or using hair removal products containing harsh chemicals can irritate the skin.

- Risk of infection, itching, and contact dermatitis, especially if the skin is scratched or infected during the hair removal process.

- There is a risk of scarring from using a razor to remove hair. Therefore, you should not shave too deeply and should shave in the direction of hair growth, using a sharp razor blade.

- Increased hair growth after hair removal, causing hair to grow back thicker and darker, resulting in an unsightly appearance.

Safe hair removal methods:

- Shaving: This is the simplest and quickest method. The only tools needed are a razor and a specialized shaving cream or gel. You need to sterilize the razor to ensure hygiene and safety during shaving. It's recommended to use a moisturizing cream or a specialized shaving gel. Shave slowly and gently in the direction of hair growth.

- Tweezers: This method is more time-consuming and requires meticulousness, and can be more painful than shaving, but it allows for the desired shape. You need to clean the tweezers and use warm water or apply moisturizer to soften the skin. Use gentle movements, plucking each hair in the direction of hair growth.

- Pruning shears: This method saves time and allows for shaping as desired, with minimal risk.

- Specialized hair removal products: Depilatories are a type of chemical hair removal agent that makes hairs fall out more easily. This method is safe but may cause allergies or irritation.

- Laser hair removal: This method is hygienic, safe, and effectively prevents hair regrowth. Doctors will shine a laser beam onto the hairy area to transmit light to the hair follicles. The heat from the beam gradually weakens and can destroy the hair follicles, preventing them from growing back. This method is contraindicated for people with infections, allergies, or irritations from hair removal creams or gels.

Post-hair removal care:

- Keep the genital area clean and avoid contact with water for the first 4 hours after hair removal.

- Absolutely avoid wearing overly tight underwear after hair removal as it can cause abrasions, creating conditions for bacteria to attack, leading to pimples and unpleasant odor.

- Do not use shower gels, soaps, or cleansing solutions containing fragrances or harsh detergents to clean the area after hair removal. Cleanse with cool water, then pat dry with a soft towel or use gentle cleansing products designed for sensitive skin.

- Avoid saunas and hot showers for three days after hair removal, as this can cause pores to dilate and lead to burning sensations.

- Avoid sun exposure for about a week after hair removal. Do not swim or engage in strenuous activity in the first few days.

- Additionally, you can gently apply coconut oil, olive oil, or moisturizer to soothe and repair the skin after hair removal.
