Vietnamese tennis player Learner Tien cannot create more surprises at Washington Open

(Dan Tri) - In the third round of the ATP 500 Washington Open 2025 taking place in the US on the morning of July 25, Vietnamese-American tennis player Leaner Tien stopped after losing 2-6, 2-6 to Davidovich Fokina.

Davidovich Fokina is ranked 26th in the ATP and he is rated much higher than Leaner Tien. The match ended quickly with a 6-2, 6-2 victory in favor of Davidovich Fokina and the Spaniard easily entered the quarterfinals.

Leaner Tien could not create any more surprises in the tournament in the US. In the second round of the Washington Open 2025 a day ago, the Vietnamese-born player caused a surprise when he defeated the world's 10th ranked opponent Rublev.

In the match against Andrey Rublev, Leaner Tien won after 2 sets with the scores of 7-5, 6-2. This was a match where the Russian player continuously missed the ball and Leaner Tien showed his mettle at the crucial moment.

Despite failing to reach the quarterfinals of the 2025 Washington Open, Leaner Tien has made great strides this season. He defeated Daniil Medvedev at the Australian Open, Alexander Zverev at the Mexican Open, Ben Shelton at the Mallorca Open and Andrey Rublev at the Washington Open.

Leaner Tien was born on December 2, 2005 in the United States, to parents who are both Vietnamese. Since turning professional, he has won three Challenger titles and four Grand Slam appearances.

In the third round of the 2025 Washington Open, Daniil Medvedev met Chinese opponent Yibing Wu. The Russian star did not have much trouble against the 243rd ATP player and won with a score of 6-3, 6-2.

In the quarter-finals, Medvedev will face Moutet, Alex De Minaur will meet Nakashima and Ben Shelton will face Tiafoe. Davidovich Fokina's opponent in the quarter-finals will be the winner of the Taylor Fritz - Matteo Arnaldi match.
