The situation between Marc-André ter Stegen and FC Barcelona is like a "war" that arose from the anger of the goalkeeper and captain.

Ter Stegen is angry about how Barcelona treated him, especially after the club signed Joan García from Espanyol for €20 million. Therefore, Ter Stegen's sudden announcement that he needs surgery and will be out for three months, instead of the initially reported four months, will put Barca in a difficult position.

Ter Stegen's message caused a major problem for Barcelona's plans, particularly regarding the registration of new goalkeeper Joan Garcia. Initially, Barca thought Ter Stegen would be out for four months if he underwent surgery to treat his persistent knee injury.

In that case, the club would use La Liga's regulations, which allow 80% of a player's salary for a long-term injury (minimum four months), to register a replacement player, in order to facilitate the arrival of the new goalkeeper Garcia.

However, in a statement released on July 25th, Ter Stegen confirmed that he would undergo surgery and would only be out for three months, from the end of July to the end of October. This means that Barcelona is not eligible to activate La Liga's emergency salary mechanism, which requires a minimum injury period of four months.

Barcelona are actively looking to offload Ter Stegen from Camp Nou.

The change in Ter Stegen's recovery time is a major blow to Barcelona, who are facing strict La Liga wage limits. Marca commented that Ter Stegen deliberately stated a three-month recovery period to prevent Barcelona from using La Liga's wage regulations, making it difficult to register new signing Garcia.

"When someone is angry, they will do everything to make things difficult for their opponent. In this case, Ter Stegen's opponent is Barcelona. Therefore, Ter Stegen announced a three-month leave to avoid paying 80% of his salary, hindering the registration of Joan García," Marca wrote.

El Pais commented: "Ter Stegen is playing a trick on Barca; the player's three-month absence announcement is calculated!" The Spanish newspaper argued that this conflict would harm both Ter Stegen and Barcelona.

If Ter Stegen deliberately shortens his recovery time beyond four months after surgery, he could easily re-injure himself. Meanwhile, if Barcelona fail to register Garcia, they will start the 2025/26 season with an unstable defense.
