Artistic "parties" for children
The cheerful laughter and eager eyes following every movement of the puppets made the courtyard of Thuy Duong Kindergarten in Thuy Nguyen ward more vibrant. Hundreds of students attentively watched the puppet show "The Adventures of Cricket" performed by artists from the Hai Phong Traditional Theatre.
Adapted from the famous work of writer Tô Hoài, the play takes young children on an adventure with the Cricket and the Grasshopper, offering many lessons about friendship, courage, and growth. Without elaborate props or stage design, through lively and relatable performances and humorous interactions, the artists have transported children into a colorful world of art. For preschool-aged children, direct exposure to traditional performing arts provides many special experiences.
More than just a simple performance, the program also helps children develop their artistic appreciation, communication skills, and imagination. Ms. Nguyen Thi Quynh, Principal of Thuy Duong Kindergarten, shared: “The children were very excited to watch the live performance. This is a meaningful activity that gives children more practical experience, while also contributing to the education of life skills and love for traditional culture in the children…”
Besides bringing art to schools, artists are also dedicating much effort to innovating the content and form of performances to suit children. Artist Ngo Duc Thanh, Head of the Puppet Art Troupe of the Hai Phong Traditional Stage Theatre, said: “This summer, the troupe has prepared many programs specifically for children, including dry puppet shows, water puppet shows, variety shows, and stories rich in educational value. The artists are always striving to innovate their presentation so that children feel closer to and more excited about traditional art.”
Along with Thuy Duong Kindergarten, the Children's Day atmosphere was vibrant at Hoa Phuong Kindergarten in Phu Lien ward with the program "Children Enjoy Children's Day - Children Watch Puppet Show". The fun performances, adorable fairy tale characters, and interaction with the artists brought the children a day filled with laughter. Many parents believe that, in the context of children being increasingly drawn to electronic devices, introducing traditional art into schools is a practical way to create more healthy and beneficial playgrounds for children during the summer.
Nurturing a love for traditional art.
From mid-May until now, the Hai Phong Traditional Theatre has continuously organized numerous performances of dry puppetry, water puppetry, and variety shows for children at schools, organizations, and at the Song Cam Theatre. Familiar works such as "This is My Wisdom," "The Adventures of Cricket," etc., continue to be updated to be more suitable for younger audiences.
Beyond just performing, the artists also focus on creating programs with rich educational content, incorporating messages about friendship, compassion, love for their homeland, and the importance of preserving national culture.
In response to the 2026 Children's Action Month, the Hai Phong Traditional Theatre has prepared a series of special artistic activities for children with many meaningful, attractive, and humanistic programs.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Thuy, Director of the Hai Phong Traditional Theatre, shared: “In May, we organized many special artistic activities, attracting thousands of people and tourists to share in the atmosphere of pride and emotion about the city and the country. Following those successes, in June, the month dedicated to children, the theatre will bring surprises for children through educational artistic programs, contributing to nurturing the souls of young children, arousing love for their homeland, compassion, and good values in life…”
In the context of modern education, which increasingly emphasizes the holistic development of "morality, intellect, physical health, and aesthetics," art is no longer a supplementary activity but has become an important part of shaping children's personality, emotions, and creativity.
Introducing traditional arts into schools from an early age not only provides students with a healthy recreational space and reduces their dependence on electronic devices, but also contributes to fostering a love for national culture and an awareness of preserving their homeland's identity from childhood.
To cultivate a love of art in children, we cannot rely solely on seasonal performances or special occasions; it requires the sustained support of families, schools, and cultural institutions.
Amidst the hustle and bustle of modern life with its many new forms of entertainment, simple puppet theaters continue to quietly sow seeds of beauty and compassion in the hearts of young children. This is not only a joy for Children's Day, but also a persistent journey of nurturing a future audience for traditional art, ensuring that national cultural values continue to be preserved and spread in contemporary life.
