Interesting destinations

Dortmund is famous as the “heart” of the Ruhr mining region. Since the beginning of the 21st century, the city has truly “transformed” into a famous tourist destination. This success is contributed by Borussia Dortmund, the team that most recently reached the final of the Champions League. Their home stadium - Signal Iduna Park (formerly known as Westfalenstadion), is also a popular tourist attraction. Daily tours of Signal Iduna Park will take visitors to every corner of the stadium. Not to mention the experiential game activities, such as the virtual reality playground that will lead players on the journey to become a professional player from the football academy to the stadium.

Signal Iduna Park Stadium will host 6 matches of Euro 2024, including 4 matches in groups B, D, F; 1 round of 16 match and 1 semi-final match. Tourists will have plenty of time to explore Dortmund. The first destination for many football fans is the German Football Museum. This museum was built with the profits Germany earned from the 2006 World Cup finals. The museum currently holds many valuable artifacts about German football clubs and the national team, such as the 4 World Cup trophies won by the German team. The German Football Museum is located right next to the Hauptbahnhof train station and is the first place many tourists visit when coming to Dortmund.

Of course, Dortmund is not just about football. From being an industrial city, Dortmund has transformed itself into a nature-loving city with many parks and other green spaces. The most famous is Westfalenpark with an area of up to 70 hectares (among the largest parks in Europe). In the park, there are many destinations for visitors to choose from such as Deutsches Rosarium - a garden with 3,000 different varieties of roses, or Kaiserhain swan lake... Dortmund TV tower in the north of the park is the place with the most beautiful panoramic view of the city. In addition, music and cultural festivals are held almost all year round in Westfalenpark.

Much of Dortmund was destroyed by bombing raids during World War II, but fortunately the old town (Viertel) is still largely intact. It is home to 13th-century buildings such as Bodelschwingh Castle and the Adlerturm (now the Children's Museum). The area around the old city wall is home to most of the monuments. Old streets such as Moltke are also famous for their many cherry blossom trees. If you come here during the cherry blossom season in April, when the old streets are covered in pink, you can't help but take a few photos or simply choose a cafe to enjoy the scenery.

Enjoy without limits

Compared to many western German cities, Dortmund has a more developed commercial sector. There are two shopping streets, Westenhellweg and Ostenhellweg, which have been famous since the Middle Ages. From local products to professional equipment, everything can be found on these two streets. Some of the souvenirs that tourists often buy when coming to Dortmund are cuckoo clocks, incense burners and tin soldiers. If you love fashion, visit Brückstraßenviertel and Kleppingstraße, where fashion stores, fabric shops and tailors are concentrated.

After parkour (an extreme sport based on fast and precise military movements) spread to Germany, Dortmund became one of the places where this sport developed the most. This city has no shortage of challenges for parkour lovers, from the old town with its houses close together to the abandoned factories with "mountains" of machine parts. The area around the Westphalian Industrial Museum is especially attractive to parkour athletes because it used to be a mine and a coal factory. The authorities have also set up a parkour area in Fredenbaumpark.

When it comes to Dortmund cuisine, nothing compares to beer. Dortmunder beer (full name Dortmunder Export) is the pride of the whole city, but there are hundreds of large and small breweries in Dortmund. Dortmunders drink beer in 2-liter glasses and they drink it whenever they feel thirsty. If it is beer before a meal, they drink a cocktail of beer, rum, licorice, nutmeg... which is good for the digestive system. Tourists should buy one or two bottles of this cocktail (called Dortmunder Tropfen Schnaps).

Dortmund used to be a mining town, so its food is simple but nutritious. Examples include pfefferpotthast (beef stew), himmel un ääd (mashed potatoes and stewed apples), and griebenschmalz (pork fat spread on pumpernickel bread and served with currywurst). In the summer, there is the Dortmunder Salzkuchen, a sandwich made with bagels, bacon, onions, salt, and caraway seeds. The best place to sample these local delicacies is the old Alter Markt market. The square in the middle of the market is also a beer garden, which is always packed with football fans during matches.
