Football played in cages is quite popular in England. |
Ngumoha's first manager, Terry Bobie-Agyekum, watched on TV as his former pupil instantly became a sensation, scoring and making history as the youngest player to score for Liverpool in their Premier League match against Newcastle on August 26th.
A dream from the small football field
When Terry Bobie-Agyekum witnessed Ngumoha's run to finish from Mo Salah's pass, he was certain of what would happen next. The manager recounted that he knew the young Liverpool talent would put the ball into the net, because his ability to dribble past opponents and finish was what made the difference. That shot gave him goosebumps, a moment that made people believe dreams could come true.
Ngumoha's dream originated on small playgrounds, in the "football cages" of East London. Bobie-Agyekum believes the greatest credit goes to James, Rio's older brother. James trained with his brother every day at the Powerleague Beckton. All of Rio's skills stemmed from those training sessions.

Bobie-Agyekum discovered Ngumoha's talent very early on. |
Ngumoha was only six or seven years old when he first arrived at the Chelsea pre-academy center in Barking, where Bobie-Agyekum was the coach. Despite being there for less than a year and starting late in August, the boy stood out with his skillful technique and never-give-up spirit.
However, Bobie-Agyekum also recalled that at that age, it was difficult to say who would become a top player. People only saw potential, but the road ahead was long and unpredictable. Nevertheless, he and his colleagues recognized enough qualities to recommend Ngumoha to Chelsea when he was old enough to move to the Cobham training ground at the U9 level.
Talent knows no age.
In 2021, fate brought them together again. At that time, Ngumoha was a student at Kingsford Community School, selected to represent Newham at the London Youth Games – a youth sporting event that had produced names like Mo Farah and Raheem Sterling.
Bobie-Agyekum was the head coach of the Newham team in the tournament. He recounted that thanks to this connection, he and Rio had the opportunity to reunite in a 5-6 a-side football tournament. Although only in 8th grade, Ngumoha was playing alongside 9th graders. This young player was confident, even somewhat arrogant in a positive way, a football artist who could turn the tide of a game in an instant.
What he regrets most is that there wasn't a video recording system like today to capture those magical goals. Ngumoha scored unbelievable goals, from his skillful dribbling to his finishing, making him a game-changer for the team.
According to a local newspaper, Ngumoha opened the scoring in the semi-final against Havering, then sealed the victory with a skillful dribble and a stunning shot in the final seconds. In the final, Ngumoha scored again, helping Newham win 3-0 against Islington.

Ngumoha just scored a goal for Liverpool. |
Less than four years later, Ngumoha scored the winning goal in the 100th minute on his Premier League debut against Newcastle. Bobie-Agyekum took no credit for Ngumoha's development, but remained proud of his contribution to his pupil's journey.
Regarding Ngumoha's decision to leave Chelsea for Liverpool last year, Bobie-Agyekum admitted that it caused a strong reaction from his former club. But he also affirmed that his pupil had been a Liverpool fan since childhood. According to him, it was a courageous decision by both Ngumoha and his older brother.
Following his impressive performance against Newcastle, attention is now focused on this weekend's match as Liverpool host Arsenal – a team that could field the talented 2008-born Max Dowman. Dowman recently became the second youngest player in Premier League history when he came on as a substitute and won a penalty in the 5-0 win against Leeds.
Bobie-Agyekum also witnessed Dowman's performance last year in Arsenal U18's 3-3 draw against Southampton, where he scored two goals and turned the game around. But according to him, Rio was the better player.
