Be careful with foods high in sugar

Many people still believe that eating rock sugar is cooler and better than regular sugar. However, Associate Professor, Dr. Lam Vinh Nien, Vice President of the Vietnam Nutrition Association, said that the chemical nature of rock sugar is sucrose, which is completely similar to white sugar. Rock sugar is made from a solution of sugar and water, so it is thinner than white sugar, creating a "cooler" feeling. If you eat a lot of rock sugar, the total amount of sugar taken into the body can still be high.

There is currently no scientific evidence that rock sugar is healthier than white sugar. Rock sugar only provides sucrose without any significant vitamins or minerals. The daily sugar intake of rock sugar is similar to that of white sugar.

Candy is often sweetened with high fructose corn syrup. Many people think that fructose does not raise blood sugar like white sugar. However, fructose is still converted to glucose in the body, so it still affects blood sugar and total energy intake for the day.

Eating sugar and candy will cause health risks such as: Increased risk of overweight and obesity due to increased energy intake; increased risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease; negative effects on oral health.

"Fructose is metabolized in the liver and studies show that eating a lot of fructose leads to an increased risk of fatty liver," Associate Professor, Dr. Lam Vinh Nien informed and said that the American Heart Association recommends that women do not eat more than 100kcal from added sugar in food and drinks per day (equivalent to 25g of sugar per day), for men, no more than 150kcal (38g of sugar).

Tet holiday, use beer and alcohol reasonably

Moderate drinking is defined as 1 unit of alcohol in women and 2 units of alcohol in men (1 unit of alcohol is equivalent to 355ml of beer, 148ml of wine and 44ml of 40% spirits).

Heavy drinking is defined as more than 3 units of alcohol per day or more than 7 units of alcohol per week in women and men over 65 years of age, and more than 4 units of alcohol per day or more than 14 units of alcohol per week in men aged 65 years and under. Heavy drinking leads to risks such as: cancer (breast, mouth, throat, esophagus, liver cancer...); pancreatitis; sudden death if there is accompanying cardiovascular disease; damage to the heart muscle (alcoholic cardiomyopathy) leading to heart failure; stroke; high blood pressure; liver disease; suicide; serious accidents, accidental death; brain damage in unborn children...

In case of drinking alcohol, you need to drink a lot of water. Alcohol dehydrates the body, so after drinking alcohol, you should drink a lot of water to compensate for the loss. Eat a lot of fruits and vegetables: help provide water-soluble vitamins, which are vitamins that are easily lost during dehydration due to alcohol, and are also necessary for the body's alcohol metabolism. Eat protein-rich foods such as eggs, beans, meat, and fish to support the body's alcohol metabolism. Avoid processed foods.
