Lighting up remote villages

Amidst the towering mountain ranges of the Northern Midlands and mountainous regions, in remote villages far from urban centers, electricity is not only a source of energy for daily life but also a beacon of hope, development, and change. With the spirit of "electricity leading the way," over the years, Phu Tho Power Company has continuously invested in building, renovating, and expanding the power grid system in remote areas, contributing to narrowing the development gap between mountainous and lowland regions.

The energization is part of the project to increase the capacity of Transformer T2 at the 110kV Hoa Binh Substation.

Phu Tho currently has over 2,000 villages in ethnic minority and mountainous areas, including 745 particularly disadvantaged villages; and 72 communes located in ethnic minority and mountainous regions. The fragmented terrain, difficult transportation, and sparse population distribution pose significant obstacles to investing in electricity infrastructure.

In reality, households without access to the national power grid are mainly located in remote, rural areas with poor transportation access, small and scattered households, resulting in very high investment costs. Harsh weather conditions and prolonged rainy seasons also significantly affect the transportation of materials and equipment and the organization of construction.

In some places, dozens of power poles have to be erected across mountains just to supply electricity to a few dozen households. Many locations are inaccessible to machinery, so electricity workers have to transport materials manually, carrying rolls of wire and iron bars over slippery hillsides. On numerous occasions, officials and workers have had to set up temporary shelters in the forest to stay on the project for days at a time...

The Hotline team of Phu Tho Power Company works under harsh weather conditions to ensure a safe electricity supply.

Despite numerous challenges, the Phu Tho electricity sector remains committed to bringing electricity to the people in the mountainous regions. In recent years, a series of projects to upgrade medium and low-voltage power lines; build new and increase the capacity of transformer substations; and combat overloading of rural power grids have been implemented in mountainous areas.

In 2025, Phu Tho Power Company achieved many outstanding results in its investment and construction work. The unit built 2 new 18.1km 110kV power lines; upgraded 7.454km of 110kV power lines from single circuit to double circuit; installed an additional 110kV-63MVA transformer; built and upgraded 287km of medium voltage power lines, 807km of low voltage power lines, and 705 distribution substations with a total capacity of 256,799kVA...

In addition, the company closely coordinated with the project management boards of EVNNPC, EVNNPT, and EVN to implement 110/220/500kV power projects in the province; completing the investment approval for 17 110kV projects. Many projects were implemented in ethnic minority and mountainous areas, contributing to improving the quality of electricity and meeting the socio -economic development needs of the locality.

Currently, the company is continuing to prepare for investment in projects to improve the quality of medium and low voltage power grids in Thanh Son, Huong Can, Van Mieu, Tan Son, Minh Dai, and Long Coc communes; and simultaneously implementing projects in Da Bac, Cao Son, Tien Phong, Quy Duc, and Tan Pheo areas... These are all areas with rugged terrain, making construction difficult, but they are of practical significance to the lives of the people.

In addition to focusing on supplying electricity for daily life, the power sector also prioritizes investing in upgrading the power grid to meet the needs of local economic development. Many projects aimed at preventing overload, reducing power losses, and improving the reliability of electricity supply have been implemented simultaneously. The company is also promoting the application of science and technology and digital transformation in management and operation, gradually modernizing the power grid towards safety, stability, and intelligence.

Staff from the Mai Chau area Power Management Team worked on-site, quickly resolving the issue and ensuring a stable and uninterrupted power supply.

In Lai Dong commune, a mountainous area where ethnic minorities account for over 94% of the population, the synchronized investment in electricity infrastructure has brought about positive changes in people's lives. To date, 100% of households in the area have access to the national power grid. With a stable electricity supply, many new economic models have been formed and replicated, contributing to increased income and job creation for the people. By 2025, the average per capita income of the commune is expected to reach over 33 million VND, an increase of 1.8 times compared to 2020; the poverty and near-poverty rate is projected to decrease by an average of 2.8% per year.

Not only Lai Dong, but many other ethnic minority and mountainous areas in the province have also recorded positive changes. By 2025, approximately 99% of households in ethnic minority and mountainous areas will have access to the national power grid and other suitable power sources.

During the period 2021-2025, the economic growth rate of this region averaged 7.5-8.5% per year; the poverty rate decreased by 2-3% annually. Sixteen communes have been removed from the list of particularly disadvantaged areas, and 115 communes have achieved the new rural standard.

To further expand the power grid and improve the quality of electricity supply to mountainous areas, Phu Tho Power Company is implementing a comprehensive set of solutions. These include focusing on requesting relevant authorities and sectors to allocate funding from national target programs and socialized capital to invest in power grids for disadvantaged villages and hamlets; coordinating with local authorities to accelerate the progress of ongoing projects; and reviewing and assessing the current state of the power grid to gradually renovate and upgrade it towards modernization.

Today, electricity not only illuminates homes in remote villages but also ignites hope and aspirations for the highlanders to overcome poverty. These electricity projects, traversing mountains and forests, are becoming a crucial driving force for socio-economic development, contributing to the increasingly prosperous development of ethnic minority and mountainous regions in the province.
