BTS "empty-handed" 3 times
On the morning of February 6 (Vietnam time), the 2023 Grammy Awards officially ended and BTS once again had to "leave empty-handed" despite being nominated in 2 categories this year.
BTS has been nominated for Grammys for the past three years but has never won an award.
Specifically, the Korean group was nominated for the Best Pop Performance by a Group/Duet category for the song "My Universe" featuring British rock band Coldplay. The group was also nominated in the Best Music Video category for the MV "Yet To Come".
However, BTS missed out on both awards. The Best Music Video award went to Taylor Swift for "All Too Well: The Short Film" and the Best Duo/Group Performance category went to the duo Kim Petras and Sam Smith for their hit of the year "Unholy".
BTS members J-Hope, RM and Suga are credited as songwriters for "Music of the Spheres" under their real names: Jung Ho-seok, Kim Nam-joon and Min Yoon-gi.
This is the third year the group has been nominated for a Grammy, but unfortunately BTS has yet to receive any awards. This result has long been predicted by experts.
In fact, the winners of the Grammy Awards are decided by the votes of the members of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences of the United States. That is, what the Grammys care about is the quality of the music, not the popularity or coverage of the group.
From a certain perspective, anthropology professor Lee Gyu Tak believes that the reason BTS keeps missing out on awards is because the Grammys still do not accept artists who are not from Europe or America.
Does BTS need a Grammy?
Korea Boo newspaper believes that BTS's failure to win the Grammy award is not a failure, because "BTS performed well enough and proved their influence".
BTS's appearance at Grammy 2022 causes strong media effect
Sharing the same opinion, Kim Jin-woo - a music professor at the Seoul Institute of the Arts said: "BTS has come up empty-handed this time, but this means that the group still has a lofty goal to achieve. Therefore, we should not call this a failure but consider it an opportunity for BTS to overcome a difficult challenge."
However, Mr. Lee Gyu Tak opened up a bigger issue: "Instead of asking why BTS didn't win, the question should be whether BTS needs a Grammy. BTS has achieved most of what artists can do.
The Grammys don't fit BTS' musical style. So why would BTS care about winning it? Aside from the symbolic value, it doesn't mean much."
Remember, two years ago, when BTS was at their peak and created a global fever with "Dynamite" and "Butter", they still sadly suffered from empty-handedness.
Furthermore, last year's Grammys only attracted 8.8 million TV viewers. Despite the flop, BTS's performance alone garnered over 7 million views.
Why is the group still listed this year, despite their lackluster performance? Sports Kyunghyang commented that BTS's name being on the 2023 Grammy nomination list is no different from "bait" to attract the media.
Of course, a Grammy is still a long way off, but BTS's global influence, sweeping the top charts in the US and contributing $5 billion annually to South Korea's GDP, is undeniable.
