The militants also took approximately 250 hostages, and Israel says around 132 of them remain in Gaza, including the bodies of at least 28 deceased hostages.
Israel declared it would crush Hamas and launched a military offensive that Gaza's health authorities say killed at least 26,083 people, about 70% of whom were women and children.
"No state is above the law."
"The ICJ ruling is an important reminder that no state is above the law," Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki said in a statement.
The South African Foreign Office, which brought the case before the ICJ, stated: “Today marks a decisive victory for international rule of law and a significant milestone in the pursuit of justice for the Palestinian people.”
"Support for peace"
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez stated: “We will continue to support peace and an end to the war, the release of hostages, access to humanitarian aid, and the establishment of a Palestinian state alongside Israel, so that both countries can coexist in peace and security.”
"Hopefully the attack will end."
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said: “We hope that the Israeli attacks on women, children and the elderly will end.”
"Orders must be obeyed."
The European Union stated: “Orders of the International Court of Justice are binding on the parties and they must comply with them. The European Union expects these orders to be fully, immediately and effectively implemented.”
"Preventing genocide"
Balkees Jarrah, deputy director of international justice at Human Rights Watch, said: “The World Court’s landmark decision has made it clear to Israel and its allies that immediate action is needed to stop the genocide and further atrocities against Palestinians in Gaza.”
