Vietnamese sports firmly in the top position

Topping the Games twice in the home games (2003, 2021) was a miracle for Vietnamese sports . In this time sending a large force to Cambodia, the Vietnamese sports delegation completed the achievement target beyond expectations with the total number of gold medals and the final ranking.

Many inspirational stories about the success of Vietnamese athletes are expected to spread to a large number of fans. A year ago, after only winning a bronze medal at the 31st SEA Games on home soil, young athlete Nguyen Quoc Toan from Bac Lieu changed himself. He not only trained day and night but also bravely increased his body weight by nearly ten kilograms as requested by the coaching staff.

Gaining weight to "avoid" world champion Rahmat Erwin Abdullah (Indonesia) in the 81 kg category, Quoc Toan accepted to face the reigning SEA Games champion Muhammad Zul Ilmi, also from Indonesia, in the 89 kg category. The reasonable decision from the coaches, combined with Quoc Toan's perfect performance, helped him win the gold medal and break 3 records of the Games.

Somewhat hesitant before Quoc Toan's impressive performance, Zul Ilmi could only finish second with a total lift of 328 kg, 17 kg less. The victory was well deserved for the Western man who had never trained abroad but succeeded in his first overseas trip. Along with the gold medal in the men's over 89 kg category won by his teammate Tran Dinh Thang, Quoc Toan made an important contribution to the sweet "tail lock" performance, helping Vietnamese weightlifting exceed the gold target (4 gold medals), ranking only behind Indonesia.

In the final of the mixed team event in judo, Vietnam met Thailand and won thanks to the performance of 19-year-old female martial artist Duong Thanh Thanh. In her first time participating in the SEA Games, in the decisive match against naturalized Japanese martial artist Oeda Ikumi, Thanh Thanh launched a beautiful strike, won a spectacular ippon point that left Oeda Ikumi "speechless". The score of 4-3 was in favor of the Vietnamese team, bringing the 8th gold medal, also winning the overall position in judo - a result that exceeded the target set before departure.

Wrestling also reaped 4 more championships thanks to Nguyen Xuan Dinh, Ngo The Sao, Can Tat Du and Ngo Van Lam. Wrestling became one of the sports that brought the most achievements to the Vietnamese delegation with 13 gold medals, always taking the number 1 position in the classical wrestling and freestyle wrestling events with 30 events at the 32nd SEA Games.

A successful congress in many disciplines along with the number 1 achievement of the entire delegation is the launching pad for Vietnamese sports to fly high, reaching new heights at the continental and world levels. That is the goal that all sports aim for.
