(Dan Tri Newspaper) - After a 5-month pilot program, District 1 has decided to expand sidewalk leasing to an additional 41 streets. Thus, along with the initial 11 pilot streets, District 1 now has 52 streets eligible for sidewalk leasing.

According to information from the District 1 People's Committee, after piloting the sidewalk rental program on 11 streets, 374 businesses have registered, generating over 810 million VND in revenue. This information was announced at the conference summarizing the pilot program and expanding sidewalk rentals on the morning of October 25th.

Mr. Vu Nguyen Quang Vinh, Vice Chairman of the District 1 People's Committee, said that after the pilot period, urban order and aesthetics in the central area have gradually stabilized. Pedestrian walkways are ensured, and there have been no traffic conflicts or impacts on the safety of pedestrians and vehicles.

Mr. Vinh added that, in addition to the 11 pilot routes, 41 other routes also meet the infrastructure requirements and do not affect traffic. From October 25th, the District 1 People's Committee officially implemented the temporary fee collection for the use of a portion of the sidewalks on these 41 routes, out of the 52 routes that have been issued.

The temporary use fee for sidewalks and roadways was approved by the Ho Chi Minh City People's Council, 10th term, at its 11th session in September 2023. From January 1, 2024, Ho Chi Minh City will apply new regulations on the management of sidewalks and roadways with a fee of 20,000-350,000 VND/m2/month.

Sidewalks available for lease must be at least 3 meters wide, with business areas located on the residential side and at least 1.5 meters reserved for pedestrians. However, implementation in many districts is still incomplete.

Local authorities are currently reviewing and supplementing the list of roads with sidewalks that are eligible for fee collection, based on feedback from the Traffic Safety Committee and the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport.
