On the evening of June 30, Anker issued its second product recall in June, warning customers about five additional power bank models to stop using "immediately due to the risk of overheating, melting, smoking or exploding," including Anker Power Bank (models A1257 and A1647), Anker MagGo Power Bank (model A1652), and Anker Zolo Power Bank (models A1681 and A1689).

"While the possibility of malfunction is considered minimal, in the interest of maximum safety, we have decided to initiate a voluntary global recall of certain Anker power bank models," Anker wrote in a statement.

These concerns are similar to what Anker mentioned in its previous recall of the A1263 PowerCore 10000 power bank sold in the US, when the company announced that it had identified a "potential issue" with the lithium-ion battery originating from one of its suppliers.

The company also said that any power banks affected by this recall should be disposed of safely at a facility that accepts lithium-ion batteries. Due to the risk of fire or explosion, these products should not be disposed of in regular trash, recycling bins, or used battery containers at various retail locations.

The explosion scandal originated from supplier Amprius. Chinese regulators have revoked the 3C certification of many products using the company's battery cells, including well-known brands such as Romoss, Anker, Ugreen and Baseus.

Earlier in the international recall announcement, Anker said the defect did not arise during the manufacturing process. It came from “unauthorized alteration of the diaphragm material” by the supplier.

The “diaphragm” here is like the safety valve of the Lithium-ion battery, blocking contact between the positive and negative poles, avoiding short circuits. Because of this problem, the power bank is at risk of catching fire under harsh conditions of use such as quickly charging the product in a thick quilt.

On the evening of June 27, Anker Vietnam announced a “voluntary” recall of some models of backup batteries currently sold in Vietnam. According to the company, this is a measure to enhance risk prevention during the production process.

The four products in this category include model A1257 (10,000 mAh battery capacity, 22.5 W charging capacity), A1647 (20,000 mAh, 22.5 W integrated USB-C cable), Anker Zolo A1681 (20,000 mAh, 30 W, integrated USB-C and Lightning cable) and Anker Zolo A1689 (20,000 mAh, 30 W, integrated USB-C and Lightning cable).

Suspicious users can check the device code located on the bottom or side of the power bank. If it matches the above models, customers can fill out the online recall form from the manufacturer to receive and process it.

The company's solution is to exchange for a new product with equivalent technology, no risk of defect, or a voucher of equal value to buy online.
