Taiwanese (Chinese) entrepreneurs are supporting disadvantaged people in the city.

According to statistics from the Department of Foreign Affairs, there are currently about 20,000 foreigners from 104 countries and territories living, studying, and working in Hai Phong , together creating a rich multicultural community.

A warm and joyful reunion.

They are the "ambassadors" spreading the traditional Vietnamese Tet culture to all corners of the world. In the final days of the year, despite being busy, Johnathan Michael Nichols (32 years old, American), an English teacher at the IZZI Foreign Language Center in the Cat Hai Special Zone, still finds time with his wife to clean the house, buy decorations, and undertake a special task: "making banh chung" (traditional Vietnamese rice cakes).

“I’ve experienced Tet (Vietnamese New Year) in Vietnam for eight years, and each year has been wonderful. The Vietnamese Tet customs that have left a deep impression on me are the gatherings and New Year greetings with relatives and friends. Especially, I learned how to make carrot jam with my wife’s grandmother. It was a moment when everyone in the family came closer together after months of working far from home. Everyone talked about happy stories and plans for the new year. Everything became so bright and beautiful, promising a new year filled with good things, warmth, and love,” shared Jonathan Michael Nichols.

For many foreign workers who have lived in Vietnam for a long time, Tet is also an opportunity to temporarily set aside work and cherish moments with loved ones. For Kevin Paul Jonker, a teacher at Hai Dang Xanh Kindergarten (Hai An ward), what always fascinates him is that Tet in Vietnam lasts for more than a week, with rich activities such as watching fireworks, visiting temples, and many traditional festivals that are lively, crowded, and interesting. The best part is that before Tet, he can teach children how to make greeting cards, write wishes, and guide them in doing some chores to help their families.

For Kevin, this was also an opportunity to learn more about Vietnamese customs, traditions, and culture during the Lunar New Year, and to enjoy the warm New Year atmosphere with his family while going on spring outings, taking photos at the Hai Phong City Theater Square, enjoying traditional dishes, and sharing them on social media.

Actively contributing to Hai Phong

As of December 2025, approximately 6,400 foreign workers are employed in industrial parks and economic zones within the city. They are not only a source of highly skilled technical personnel and active managers involved in the production chain, promoting technological innovation and contributing taxes, creating jobs for Vietnamese workers, but they also play a role in promoting economic and cultural exchange and contributing to social welfare.

According to Mr. Yu Peng Hui, General Director of Horn Vietnam Co., Ltd. (An Duong Industrial Park), he wanted to show his appreciation to the employees and workers after a year of hard work. Therefore, in addition to Tet gifts, he asked the Trade Union officials to prepare "lucky red envelopes" for him to give to the workers on their first day back at work.

As for Mr. Wang Kun-Sheng, President of the Taiwanese Business Association in Hai Phong, every Lunar New Year, he undertakes a special task: donating 200-400 gifts to show the care and sharing of Taiwanese businesspeople and merchants to those in difficult circumstances, disadvantaged, and vulnerable living in social welfare facilities or in the community in Hai Phong. "We hope that, with the joint efforts of businesses, everyone can celebrate a fulfilling, prosperous, and peaceful Lunar New Year," Mr. Sheng shared.

It is these simple, familiar, yet beautiful things that have become the "charm" and "attraction" that have led more foreigners to know Hai Phong as a welcoming and hospitable land.

With the collective efforts and contributions of the foreign workforce, the port city is becoming, and will continue to be, a cultural destination, a place of love, reunion, happiness, and success.
