According to Euronews , NASA's move comes as the US government is gradually eliminating programs and documents on diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives under pressure from President Donald Trump.

First Woman: NASA's Promise for Humanity , first published in 2021, follows Commander Callie Rodriguez as she leads a diverse crew on a journey to the Moon.

The book, which was once available for free download, is no longer available on NASA's website.

The book 's sequel, First Woman: Expanding our Universe , also disappeared.

However, an app developed to accompany the book is still available on Apple's App Store.

Since Donald Trump began his second term as president, NASA has complied with a White House directive to remove any mention of DEI initiatives.

In January, Mr. Trump issued an executive order requiring federal agencies, departments, and employees to end all DEI programs and report colleagues who appear to “disguise these programs with metaphorical or ambiguous language.”

Silently remove content

NASA was among the agencies that sent the memo to all employees, based on a template from Trump's Office of Personnel Management, claiming DEI programs "divide Americans by race, waste taxpayer dollars, and cause shameful discrimination."

In March, NASA quietly and significantly changed the public language of its Artemis program — which had pledged to send non-white American men to the moon.

"NASA will send the first woman, the first person of color, and the first international partner astronaut to the Moon, using groundbreaking technology to explore more than ever before," the statement once appeared on the website but has now been removed.

Other agencies have also removed “diversity”-related content from their websites, including the National Park Service. However, the agency later restored a page of content and said the removal was an “error.”
