A student passed the driving theory test after failing 59 times, spending more than $1,700 and 60 hours of study, setting a record for the person with the most theory failures in the UK.
The unnamed student passed his theory test 60 times in Redditch, Worcestershire, setting a record for the most attempts in the UK, AA Driving School announced to the media today.
The previous record was held by a learner who failed 57 times before passing in Hull, East Yorkshire, with second and third place held by two learners who failed 55 and 53 times respectively in other locations, according to figures from the UK's Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA).
Camilla Benitz, AA's executive director, said the test was difficult but often underestimated. She and the school developed an app to help students prepare for it. "There are people who think they can pass without trying, but that's not true. Thorough preparation is the key to success. Apps like ours can really help," Benitz said.
Students in Redditch spent $1,700 before passing their theory exam. “The determination of the students to pass is impressive, but there is no need to spend so much money with the right revision tools. Psychology definitely plays a role, and changing the way you study is key,” Benitz added.

The UK's theory test pass rate has fallen to 44% in 2022-23, down from 65% in 2007-2008, the Department for Transport said.
The test consists of 50 multiple-choice questions on road rules and driving skills, with students required to answer at least 43 correctly. Next is the hazard perception test, which includes 14 video recordings of situations, with a passing score of 44/75. Students will spend about $30 to take the test, which lasts about an hour.
Those who fail will have to wait at least three days before retaking the test. After passing the theory test, students need to take the practical test within two years.
Several people have been arrested for taking the theory test for someone else. Kaur, 30, was sentenced to eight months in prison last year for taking about 150 theory and practical tests for someone else.
