At Hoa Binh Theater, singer Uyen Linh's "The Vocalist" show (on the evening of November 9th) was packed with audience members.
This is the atmosphere most singers are looking forward to after the Ho Chi Minh City performance market was affected by the economic recession.
As Quoc Thien commented, Uyen Linh knows how to "breathe new life" into songs. She always creates a "buzz" whenever she performs old songs, such as "Anh" in the "Beautiful Sister Riding the Waves" show, "Chi La Giac Mo" and "Duong Cong" in Vietnam Idol. 2,000 audience members were present simply to enjoy the female vocalist's signature voice, accompanied by the visually stunning staging by director Nguyen Quang Dung, at a time when spectacular shows and stage performances are the focus.
The music market in Ho Chi Minh City is becoming vibrant again.
On the first day of GENfest 2024 - Cities In The City: City within a City (November 24th) at The Global City new center (Ho Chi Minh City), the confirmed lineup of artists excited young audiences, including Hwasa, Loco, Chi Pu, Karik, Andree Right Hand, HIEUTHUHAI, HURRYKNG - GERDNANG group, MANBO, Phuc Du, and Duong Domic. On the second day of the festival (November 25th), the GENfest 2024 lineup will include PSY, Suboi, tLinh, MONO, Wren Evans, WXRDIE, Quang Hung MasterD, and WEAN.
From the moment the performing artists were announced, GENfest 2024 excited fans with the appearance of Karik - one of the biggest names in Vietnamese rap. The group GERDNANG is preparing to deliver a spectacular stage at GENfest, with performances showcasing the unique personalities of each member, along with an explosive collaboration of the talented trio: HIEUTHUHAI, HURRYKNG, and MANBO.
HIEUTHUHAI shared: "Last year, I had the opportunity to perform at GENfest, and it was amazing, from the stage and the audience to the sound. This year I'm back, promising many surprises and exciting things to come."
HURRYKNG couldn't hide his excitement and expressed his anticipation for an incredibly energetic performance with the GERDNANG group. Wren Evans, MONO, Quang Hung MasterD, Duong Domic, WEAN... are all prominent young talents in the Vietnamese music scene today.
With their unique musical styles, these singers quickly won the hearts of the audience. At GENfest 2024, they will all deliver an explosive performance, taking the audience on a colorful and emotional musical journey.
Never before has the live performance market in Ho Chi Minh City been as vibrant as it is now. Live shows by singers Trung Quan Idol, Cam Ly, Park Bom (former member of the Korean girl group 2NE1); live shows by Duc Tri, Quoc Thien, Uyen Linh, Tung Duong, Phuong My Chi; the "Brother Says Hi" concert; the "Brother Overcomes a Thousand Thorns" live concert... have caused the concert market in Ho Chi Minh City to "explode".
More importantly, the concerts were packed with audiences, a sign of revival for Ho Chi Minh City's performing arts market. The concert "There Were Times" (October 5th) by composer Duc Tri attracted over 4,000 attendees and lasted over four hours. This was the biggest solo music event in the composer's career, with many interesting highlights. A week later, the concert by singer-songwriter Vu took place, attracting over 8,000 attendees.
Positive signs
Recently, audiences in Ho Chi Minh City were left bewildered by the difficult choices when all three programs, "Brother Overcoming a Thousand Obstacles," "Brother Says Hi," and the Hoi-Thuan-Hoi 2024 music night, took place on the same day.
Remarkably, despite being held in Ho Chi Minh City on the same day and at the same time, all three events were sold out. While "Brother Overcoming a Thousand Obstacles" attracted 20,000 attendees, "Brother Says Hi" drew 15,000-20,000, and "Hoi-Thuan-Hoi 2024" was equally impressive with 9,000 attendees. In just one night, Ho Chi Minh City attracted approximately 50,000 attendees to these events, generating hundreds of billions of dong in revenue. This demonstrates the significant potential for growth in the performing arts industry in the city.

Even solo live shows attract impressive audiences. A prime example is Phuong My Chi's "Crane Universe" live show, which drew nearly 10,000 viewers.
Given what's happening, the prediction of tens of thousands of attendees at 8Wonder, featuring 21st-century music icons like Imagine Dragons, Dreamy Cities, GENfest 2024, and the Ho Do International Music Festival 2024, is entirely feasible.
The performances not only attracted large audiences but also impressed with their quality. Each event bore a distinct personal touch, providing audiences with a feast for both the ears and the eyes. Musician Phuong Uyen commented, "Vietnamese music is developing like a 'storm.' The programs and young people are working together to elevate Vietnamese music to a level very close to that of other countries like South Korea, Japan, and even the European and American markets. The programs are all excellent."
This vibrancy is creating exciting development opportunities for the city, and above all, in terms of the development of the cultural industry, this boom is an optimistic sign.
People's Artist Nguyen Thi Thanh Thuy, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture and Sports of Ho Chi Minh City, said that in the strategy and plan for the development of the cultural industry of Ho Chi Minh City until 2035, the performing arts sector has been identified as one of the key areas. Ho Chi Minh City was once the most vibrant performance destination in the country. The southward migration of artists from all over the country is clear evidence of the peak period of the performing arts market in Ho Chi Minh City. However, after a long time, Ho Chi Minh City is no longer the top choice for many promoters due to many objective factors. However, currently, the peak of the performing arts seems to be returning.
