love life

Touched, thrilled, amazed, fascinated, surprised, admired, grateful… are the many emotions I experienced when turning each page of the autobiography “Love to live” by author Nguyen Bich Lan (Vietnamese Women Publishing House). A special book because it was “launched” on a special day, the day the author turned 50.

Remember, when Lan was first diagnosed with an incurable disease, the doctors predicted that she would be lucky to live until she was 18. Instead of frantically trying to fight the disease, with strong and determined actions, Nguyen Bich Lan accepted the disease as an inevitable part of life and learned to adapt to reality. And she left behind the "terrifying age of 18" for more than three decades to become stronger, more radiant and shining in her own way.

Pursuing education, pursuingeducation regardless of how harsh, cruel and difficult the reality is, that is an order Lan gave and forced herself to strictly follow. And the path of self-study (learning culture, learning foreign languages, learning everything a normal person must learn in school that a sick person like Lan missed) opened up new paths and horizons for Lan that she herself could not imagine the magic of.

"Love to live" is attractive because it is written in a simple, rustic, and honest way, but contains the spirit of philosophy, of wisdom, and intelligence. The profound philosophy of the stories that Lan tells in the book is expressed not in a way that teaches life lessons but in a way that tells her own life story in a gentle, calm way, creating a strange appeal to each page. Simple but wise.

Lan's life is a great philosophical work. With all her efforts, she has gathered the enormous source of human knowledge, combined with her self-taught foreign language skills and personal life experiences to translate each page of English books into Vietnamese, providing readers with valuable translated works. What she has tried to overcome to live has a very real, very real, very practical meaning, although it is an extraordinary reality that not everyone is capable of doing.

Part 1 of the autobiography is the professional stories of a “farmer in the field of words”. She tells about the fate that brought her to the professional book translation profession, the spread and inspiration from her own life and works. Each story of real people and real events written by Lan carries a message full of love and gratitude for life. It is so touching and full of energy! Reading “Like to live”, many pages I had to stop in the middle, waiting for my emotions to calm down before “daring” to continue reading.

Finding her own path with a lot of intelligence and courage, she wrote her life story in the autobiography “Never Give Up”, spreading strength and inspiration to many people, not just the disabled. She also received a huge amount of energy from the community’s feedback and continued to spread it more and more strongly to larger communities as well as to disadvantaged communities in society.

The response of readers to Lan’s inspirational stories made her “reluctantly” become a psychologist. What she shares in this book is just a few of the many stories that readers confided in her about their miraculous transformation after receiving positive energy from her book. For Lan, this is also an “exhausting happiness” because the need for empathy, sharing and advice from readers is too great, beyond her physical illness.

Part 2 of “Love to Live” is worthy of being a specialized psychology book. It can stand alone as a separate work. It is a journey of Lan’s self-awareness to choose the optimal way of life that brings happiness and peace to individuals and the community. This is especially valuable for people who are struggling in the chaos of adversity, not knowing where to go, not knowing what to do. Each story in Nguyen Bich Lan’s “journey” is full of knowledge, experience, skills, and usability, and deserves to be read over and over again so that each of us can reflect on our own lives and improve ourselves towards a happy and peaceful life.

In “The Dove Flying to Find Grandma” that Lan translated, when a boy in trouble was helped by a kind man, he asked him: “Why did you help me?” He replied: “You helped me and I will remember, and when I grow up, I will help someone in trouble. That will be a never-ending circle”. With “Love to Live”, Lan contributed to creating a never-ending circle, which is the circle of intelligence, courage, love, and belief in the miraculous power of human beings when it is recognized and developed. It is passed on and spread from Lan to readers, from readers to those who have connections with them, from one person to another. Just like that, it makes human life more beautiful and worth living.

The light of intelligence, talent, courage, love of people, love of life, will, and the ability to overcome adversity to be happy and successful, to enjoy life in Lan's own way has spread like a cool stream of water and helped the tree of life become greener and more lush. Countless lives have been revived from the inspiration imparted from the unbelievable but true life story of Nguyen Bich Lan.
