According to a press release from the Swedish government , the defense cooperation agreement (DCA) between Sweden and the United States came into effect on August 15th.
For two centuries, Sweden maintained a policy of military non-alignment, but is now undergoing rapid changes. The country became NATO's newest member in March 2023.
In December 2023, Sweden, Finland, and Denmark signed bilateral DCAs with the United States. These agreements will take effect after ratification by the parliaments of each country.
According to the DCAs, the US gains access to military infrastructure in these countries. According to Swedish Television, the Swedish Parliament approved the agreement with 266 votes in favor, 37 against, and 46 abstentions, despite opposition from the left-wing and Green parties who criticized the lack of provisions related to nuclear weapons.
Meanwhile, the Finnish Parliament ratified the DCA with the US in July, and it is expected to take effect on September 1st. The Danish Parliament has yet to vote on the agreement.
