White notes that water-soluble vitamins tend to be better tolerated on an empty stomach. But fat-soluble vitamins and multivitamins should be taken with meals to prevent stomach upset and help increase vitamin absorption.

According to the Mayo Clinic, iron supplements should be taken on an empty stomach for optimal absorption. If you are taking iron and calcium, be sure to take them far apart so your body can absorb them best.
