The timing of vitamin intake can determine their effectiveness.

Is it better to take vitamins in the morning or in the evening?

Nutrition expert Jim White, from the American Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, explains: The best time to take vitamins depends on the type of vitamin.

The timing and method of use depend on whether it is a water-soluble or fat-soluble vitamin.

Some vitamins have specific effects on the body and need to be taken at the right time. For example, vitamin B can help produce energy, so it's better to take it in the morning. And magnesium should be taken in the evening to help with sleep.

The best time to take vitamins

Depending on their composition, vitamins are divided into two groups: water-soluble and fat-soluble.

Water-soluble vitamins: Vitamin B, Vitamin C

According to expert White, water-soluble vitamins can be taken at any time, before or after meals. Therefore, the best time to take these vitamins is when you can remember most easily.

Fat-soluble vitamins: Vitamins A, D, E, and K, omega-3 fish oil, gac fruit oil.

Expert White explains: Fat-soluble vitamins need to be consumed with a meal containing fat to help the body absorb them. You'll see them in oil form. They can be taken at any time, as long as it's with a meal containing fat, according to Prevention.

As for multivitamins, they can be taken at any time, as long as they are taken with a meal that contains fat.

When is the best time to take a multivitamin?

Both Gans and White explain that multivitamins typically contain both fat-soluble and water-soluble vitamins. Therefore, it's best to follow the rule for fat-soluble vitamins, meaning taking them with meals.

Is it okay to take vitamins on an empty stomach?

Dr. White notes that water-soluble vitamins tend to be better tolerated on an empty stomach. However, fat-soluble vitamins and multivitamins should be taken with meals to prevent stomach upset and help increase vitamin absorption.

According to the Mayo Clinic, iron supplements should be taken on an empty stomach for optimal absorption. If you are taking both iron and calcium supplements, remember to take them separately for best absorption.
