The message from the numbers

This year's annual report by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI - Sweden) on the global arms trade reflects one of the current trends in world security politics: war in many places and the increasing need for security guarantees.

In fact, the arms trade has always been very active, and the production of weapons for armament and export has always been thriving. However, the figures released by SIPRI for 2025 contain some new messages.

Accordingly, Europe has become the world's largest arms importer, meaning it has become the world's largest arms import market. This shows that security is now not only a top priority for the continent but is also receiving significant investment. The only possible reason for this is the immediate and long-term impact of the Ukraine conflict, and the possibility of the US loosening its commitment to protecting the security of its NATO allies.

Another reason is that even though these allies have now determined their commitment to self-reliance in future security, it will still take more time to achieve this goal. Until then, Europe will likely remain the world's largest arms importer. SIPRI data also shows that Europe is highly dependent on US arms imports and will need a long time to significantly reduce and break free from this dependence.

The message from SIPRI's figures is that while the global arms trade helps countries enhance their national security capabilities, it also contributes to global insecurity and instability.
