Successful test of cobia farming in earthen ponds

Báo Ninh ThuậnBáo Ninh Thuận11/06/2023

Mr. Nguyen Duc Minh's family in Go Gu village, Ho Hai commune (Ninh Hai) has over 1.2 hectares of ponds but only uses 0.3 hectares to raise snails, 0.3 hectares for settling and treatment ponds, the remaining area is left fallow.

He realized that abandoning ponds caused waste and lost income. In 2021, the Level 1 Seafood Seed Center (now the Center for Plant, Livestock and Aquatic Seed Services) supported 50 cobia fry for experimental breeding in an earthen pond with an area of 3 sao. Although initially familiar with the new species, he was still confused about feeding, care and management, but thanks to his diligence in learning and receiving enthusiastic advice and guidance from the Level 1 Seafood Seed Center, after 8 to 10 months of breeding, the fish grew and developed well, with an average weight of 5 kg/fish, and a survival rate of over 70%.

Model of raising cobia in earthen pond of Mr. Nguyen Duc Minh's family.

In 2022, Mr. Nguyen Duc Minh boldly invested in raising 2,000 fish on an area of 5 sao. After 8 to 10 months of raising, he harvested an average weight of 5 kg/fish. After deducting expenses, he still had a profit of 600 million VND. This profit was the motivation for Mr. Minh to boldly invest in raising the next crops. In 2023, he continued to raise 2,000 fish on an area of 5 sao (density of 1 fish/2.5 m2). Currently, the fish are 3 months old and growing and developing normally, with an average weight of over 1.5 kg. Thus, cobia can adapt to grow and develop in earthen ponds in Dam Nai area. Mr. Minh also created conditions for households to visit and learn about the model and enthusiastically shared his experiences in the process of raising fish.

In recent years, shrimp diseases have continuously occurred along with the high prices of inputs such as breeds, feed, and medicine, so many ponds in Go Gu village, Hoi Hai commune in particular and the aquaculture area around Dam Nai in general have been abandoned. Some households have switched to raising other species such as snails, groupers, etc., but have not yet fully exploited the pond area. Hopefully, in the near future, the model of raising cobia in earthen ponds will open a new direction for aquaculture around Dam Nai.
